We've just launched the Stolen Vehicle Database. It's a new website for us all; the mission is to reduce bike theft... You post the details of a stolen bike on it and it gets a profile for all to see.

The benefit is that all the bikes being added builds up a huge database of detailed info on bike thefts. This is all be browsable so you can see what's going missing, where, when and how. Reports, stats, maps with the thefts on, etc (stats coming soon).

The site's still super new, so there's still cool features coming like getting notifications for where you park, free vehicle check lookups, etc. There's a growing team behind it, people dedicated to the cause, so the features will come soon.

If you know anyone that's had a bike stolen, please get them to put it up on the site!

The data will be made available as well via an API so people campaigning for better policing, security products and the like can get good, solid data to use.

It's a non-profit site, there's no gain except for us all ultimately.

This is our chance to level the playing-field a bit, get one over on the thieves!

A bit about me: I run another biking community in London, UK, have had three bikes stolen and have had enough. I hope you can see this is something that we can all benefit from if we come together. Please help support SVD...

Not sure how you plan on this working but would it be useful to add past thefts to it so as to build up a more detailed picture of bad area's or are you only interested in new/current thefts?

For instance at the beginning of 2010 I had a bike stolen, would you like that added?

Absolutely, it's for historical thefts as well as current ones. The first ones to go in were my own three bikers (man...) from a few years ago.

We're lining up other partners to see if we can get bulk loads of thefts, i.e. the DVLA, etc. They may want money, but we'll see what can be done for a non-profit.

Looks good, but if your open to suggestions - why don't you add a region?

I think this would be more use than how it was taken.

From first glance you can see the ones stolen from "United Kingdom" and how they were - but I would like to be keeping an eye out for ones around the Manchester area without having to click on every one.

elky, you're on the money! We do have this planned. We're tracking "Places" and have a couple of things planned:

- Much easier navigation of places, with top places under a place visible, i.e. under United Kingdom you'll see Manchester, Liverpool, London etc, along with stats for these places.

- Subscribe to a location. Enter the post-codes of where you park/live and the site will keep an eye on the area and any new vehicles reported within the immediate area and you'll get a notification to tell you. I think this will be REAL useful.

I've already found out on SVD that somewhere where I park every now and then had a bike stolen, at knife-point. Pretty shocking.

There's a ton of features planned, but we wanted to get the site out as early as possible and get it collecting data, and then add new features in quickly.

We need help populating it though. It's open to historical thefts as well as current.[/list]

Nice; I've wanted to make something along these lines for a long time, but never had the time.

As a start for new features; how about a section (could be a wiki or similar) for discussing new features and how you want the site to progress. Have thought about how to make this sort of thing work in quite a bit of detail in the past.
(I appreciate that of course new features are going to be restricted by time etc. Might be able to get a decent little development community going with the API too Thumbs Up.)

Yes G, because it's an open venture, we'll publish a road-map. We're working on a short-term road-map right now. The top feature request though is notifications for areas. That and vehicle lookups. Kind of like a free HPI check.

There's some really good technical people interested in helping out. It's great because it's a subject we all empathise with so it sells itself!

Time is always against us. I had to stop working on other things to work on this as I felt morally obligated.

First thought just quickly looking at your site, taking a random one.
https://stolenvehicledatabase.org/profiles/2007-yamaha-yzf-r6/47
Is that location accurate?
2007 R6 - probably fully comp so can buy a new bike.
Removed from private property, so probably at home.
Just under a cover, not in a garage.
If I was a bike thief, I'd now know where to have a nose around a couple of months after the page was posted.

G, people are recommended to be cautious when posting up the exact location if it's their home. Though ultimately it's their decision. The original thieves will already know, so it's not something completely new.

We recommend people move the location to somewhere less specific, i.e. their town centre.

Love the idea. However, in addition to the above issues:

It doesn't (currently) show the VIN, (and plates are trivial to steal/swap/buy).

It won't replace an HPI check, and the HPI will already show up the vehicle as stolen.

I can't see any way to contact the owner directly - I'd have thought that was the single most important function of the site?

OK, I can add a comment, but that's public - if I spot a blagged bike, I'd rather contact the owner privately.

I'm not sure if you're currently collecting enough personal information to require registration under the DPA, but it might be as well to register anyway, if for no other reason than to provide confidence to potential partners.

Crack on though, it's a brilliant scheme.

Hi Roger... It does collect the VIN, but if the owner doesn't supply it, the label doesn't show. Thinking about it now, we should change this so it just says Not Supplied or something. Thanks for the idea Smile

We are DPA compliant at the moment, but expect to have to be fully registered under the scheme when we open up the API.

It won't replace a HPI either, you're right, but a lookup service has been requested by a number of people already, even including a manufacturer.

No, it's not. It doesn't work, never will on the scale needed to make it successful.

It is a real shame, but until someone with a decent bank balance, a consumer mindset and some programming skills to boot get's involved it cannot happen.

Indeed, it's a hell of a lot of work, a real hell of a lot of work.
And a good balance would go a long way to helping it work and keep it a "serious hell of a lot of work" rather than an "incomprehensible serious lot of work".

I've had ideas around this for many years.

But, ignoring the fact I'm lazy in such matters anyway; don't have the inclination to dedicate that much time (which is generally interchangeable with money) to sorting it out, much as it's a "nice idea".
