I had a LHD classic car with only kmh on the speedo, and a big pile of MOTs, so can't believe there's a problem.

My mate had to swap his speedo over with one of his other bikes when he registered his imported bike with the dvla to get his reg for the UK. Then swapped it back when he got his reg.

Construction & Use Regs say

Speedometers

35.—(1) Save as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3), every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately.

It looks like just kph might be illegal if you can't change it between kph and mph, or display both at the same time.

^^^Zackly^^^

The MoT doesn't currently cover the speedo at all, so it won't get picked up there, but that doesn't make it OK.

There is a difference between a stack of/got an mot, and illegal.

I'd hazard a guess that if a speedometer is fitted to your vehicle it must be capable of displaying the speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour. Even if you put a sticker over the dial on the cover, that will do.

Officer was right I guess, if he were to serve you an FPN for it I guess it'd come under either CU20 or MS60? They seem to fit the best IF it is an endorsable offence?

This is on vehicles first used on or after 1st of April 1984 apparently, following on from Joe's post.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

I have a Jap import van and that had to have the speedo converted to mph before it was registered / checked.

The little Chinese 125 I have just bought has kph in big numbers and the tiniest sized numbers for mph you have ever seen. I just have to guess the speed. Laughing

Yeah you have to be able to read it in MPH. The simplest way is just to get some stickers.
