My cousin lives in Australia and (due to a "windfall") wants me to see if I can send him 2 or 3 bikes out there - he reckons it might be cheaper to buy them over here due to the strong aussie dollar and weak pound. Does anyone have any experience of sending new bikes abroad like that? E.g. shipping companies to use, how to get them boxed up (would the dealer do that?) insurance/paperwork etc? Any advice greatly received!! Thanks!

There's no Customs Duty on a Motor Cycle, but GST at 10% will apply. You must obtain import approval prior to shipment, otherwise your vehicle will be re-exported or destroyed, as well as facing a possible fine of up to A$13,000. Incidentally, you also need to get import approval for such items as ride-on mowers, quad bikes, motorised scooters and mini motorbikes.

Don't know about shipping to aus, but I got quotes of 500quid to ship my bike to the states Thumbs Up

I imagine you would need to crate it up yourself and drain all fluids. Thumbs Up

From a quick look on EBay AU, a GSX-R600 that sells over here for around £4999 is on sale over there for about £7200. I doubt this is the general rule for all bikes but it seems so for sports Suzukis.

On used bikes there may be a market for it but make sure you factor in paperwork, insurance, I can imagine shipping would be around £1500+ and there is all the vehicle checks/registration etc when you get there.

If you/he can make a profit doing it, fantastic, but after everything is factored in I can't see it being that much of a profit. Why not look at countries where new bikes have HUGE tax markups like some places in Europe? This usually drives up the price of used bikes and of course, less transportation.

Cheers!
