I have got a 12,000 mile service coming up which the mechanic told me would involve an airfilter change and an oil and filter change. He asked if my bike uses Synthetic oil and i frankly don't know. Just wondering if anyone who has a Hornet or a CBR600 knows to whether they use Synthetic Oil or Not.

PS. The Mechanic said it would be about £130 for a 12,000 mile service, is this correct Question .

Thanks

Its all down to what oil you have in there now, not that it matters much. Personally I'd stick with semi syn in a hornet, fully syn can cause clutch slip. The best thing to do is pick an oil that does the job nicely, and stick with it.

No idea about pricing. £130 sounds like a chunk of cash for 2 filters and some oil, and a general check over.

An article in a bike mag fairly recently said that you should only really use fully synthetic on performance V twins and four cylinder litre bikes. Certainly semi synthetic should be fine for the hornet I would have thought. Really its up to you. Either type will be fine but the fully synth will be more expensive I reckon. If you want peace of mind then go for the fully synthetic, if you want to save cash go for the semi. Smile

Price sounds about right from a shop. The 12000 mile service on the cbr consisted of plugs, filters, oil, brake pads and fluid.

I use a semi synth in the CBR.

Hi

Personally I would probably stick to the semi sythetic.

However I would not worry about using fully synthetic. Some car oils have additives that can cause clutch slip, but using a synthetic oil itself should not cause clutch slip. The main advantage of synthetic oils is that they can be engineered to have a decent viscosity range. This to be a 10W40 they need less additives. The additives are one of the main things to break down, so a synthetic can still be a 10W40 after 10000 miles while the mineral oil has degraded to a 20W30. This is why synthetic oils have far longer life spans than mineral oils.

All the best

Keith
