For the second time in as many weeks, I had a pedestrian just run out from between the cars in the middle of slow moving traffic and nearly get wiped out by me...

Whenever I cross traffic I always look down the middle for motorbikes or pushbikes, are some people just oblivious? I don't even know how I didn't hit the burberry-wearing stella-swigging idiot.

I guess it would've been for the greater good... but at the time I felt the cowl of the CBR was important to me intact. You know what they say about hindsight being 20:20.

There's always people that are off in their own world, a week or two ago I had a female with headphones step out from between a car and a van (other side of the road) who was wearing headphones and didnt even look to see if there was anyone coming down the road, she stepped out as I was about 6 foot from her hiding place behind the van but she saw me at the last second and while I swerved she fell backwards on the floor in a spectacular fashion (I saw her get back up in my mirror and she didn't say anything or get mad when she crossed the road) oh and there were 3 or 4 bikes behind me followed by a line of cars

I reluctantly accept that the smartphone zombie parade is the biggest hazard to me on my commute into London. I have to pass through a few touristy areas where it’s particularly bad, but the general level of common sense for pedestrians is startlingly low. They are even worse than the psychopathic menace that is the ubiquitous black Addison Lee minivan.

Bring back Tufty!!!!

I propose that crossing the road while looking at a phone should be a punishable offense. Nothing too unreasonable, maybe just amputation or blinding. Twisted Evil

What has really been annoying me the last few weeks of late:

The arrogant peds that start crossing as the lights are going green and even after traffic is moving they slowly walk across, dont even bother with a half canter.

They never used to do it with the R1/Yoshi can but now i have a quiet bike im seeing more and more of it...

When filtering it is advisable to only go about five mph faster than queuing traffic. Standing traffic encourages pedestrians to cross between. As pedestrians have Priority over vehicle you must give way no matter what.

Slow the fuck down.

On the way home tonight, I was turning left at a junction. I saw this guy turn to look and he looked straight at me - still 5ft from the road I was turning into and I was definitely indicating.
I had a feeling he was going to step out on me anyway so I was slower as I went round the corner but the dumb sod still jumped in front of me and then across the cyclist coming the other way.
Weirdly I was pulled out on yesterday too - that was worse, nearly mated with an Audi... Although he did look like he'd shit himself when I damn near stoppied through his driver window horn blaring Very Happy

As I put in another thread earlier, a pedestrian walked out on my mate earlier. He swerved - pedestrian jumped same way, swerved back and the guy jumped back at the same time then they collided. Old guy (pedestrian) not too badly hurt, my mate got knocked out, loads of bruises and a broken nose. No idea on the bike yet as the cops had it carted off whilst he was in the ambulance.

I find Kilburn High Road (A5) in North London is particularly notable for this, tends to be the stretch between Kilburn High Road station and Kilburn tube station. Usually caucasian, drunk and chav/pikey + will inevitably lead to them shouting and swearing vaguely in your direction.
N.B best avoid wiping out these oxygen thieves as a no win no fee "he ran me over on purpose as all my mates who were at the side of the road drinking Kestrel will testify, and as I'm already claiming benefits for an ingrowing toenail that prevents me from working, I will need a massive cash settlement to pay for my 6 children that may or may not be mine" claim

Not had this happen on my bike yet as they normally hear it first, but in the car its happened a few times, they often cross, see my car and realize how close i am to them, but then carry on crossing at the same pace like they have right of way. I always speed up on purpose and beep when they do that.

^^This. I once hit a person wearing headphones who stepped out into the road without looking. I had no time to do anything except dip my shoulder and brace for impact. He did a 360 spin on the spot and then sat down in the road looking confused and wearing a 'WTF just happened' expression.
The very next day, at exactly the same spot, a young oriental girl (again, wearing headphones) stepped out in front of me without looking. Because of the previous day's impact, I was ready for it the second time and managed to stop just in time.
I flipped open my visor, and gave her the most potty-mouthed torrent of abuse I think I've ever dispensed. I don't know if it was shock from the near-miss, or the tirade of Anglo-Saxon she received (or a combination of both), but it reduced her to tears.

Embarassed

In my defence, hopefully she'll remember for the future that stepping into a busy road, without looking, during rush hour traffic is not an especially bright thing to do.

You'll get no mercy from God or the polis if you hit a pedestrian.
You know they are there.
You know they are at times unpredictable.
You know they do stupid things.
Drive/Ride to suit the road conditions and you'll be fine.

All too common, not on the bike thanks to the race can but in the bus i'm sure they think they can win, they are wrong and I don't usually brake for them. Twisted Evil

Horns= Fail beacuse its always to late.

Enlighten pedestrians, and everyone else of your presence with an audible exhaust* that simply says "Watch out you clueless f**knuts i'm on the approach" Thumbs Up (perhaps even in the same voice that bin lorrys have when reversing)

*be wary however that such an item may attract unwanted attention from battenburg sporting types"

The CBR600 is a lot quieter than the GPZ was. At low revs it is virtually silent with the stock exhaust when on the crawl.

I think people 5 miles away heard the GPZ coming! I'll just have to rev it as I go through traffic or something.
