PostPosted: 23:48 - 14 Mar 2012    Post subject: Think I have sold my bike, buyer wants paypal Reply with quote

Hi, as above, someone said they want my bike but all their money is in paypal, what should I do? I don't want to put it through as a purchase because I will loose about £50 at least, but if he puts it through as a gift he can withdraw it.
What do you recommend?
He wants it dropping off but my insurance runs out before he would have chance to withdraw from paypal into his bank, what should I do?
thanks, grant

Agreed with the above. Whats to stop him from sending the money through paypal to you then lodging a dispute when you have delivered the bike. Paypal will always side with the buyer, he gets a bike, he gets his money back, you get raped.

Put an end to it anyway now. He mentioned he has reached his withdrawal limit so thought I'd have a look around. My limit doesn't allow me to receive that much

He can apply cold hard cash to your hand plus extra for delivering the bike and covering your transport costs back home again. If it doesn't feel right, wait for a buyer who won't dick you around because the "all my money is in PayPal" is crap.

Has he said WHY he wants to use paypal?

I'd say cash on collection only to be safe

Cash on the barrelhead. You can transfer money from Paypal to your bank but it incurs a fee and you have to wait. If he's that genuine then take a deposit to hold it for 2 weeks while he does this.

Paypal will side with the buyer. Tell him to withdraw the fund, it only takes 2 days to transfer it into a bank account.

told him to ring up paypal tomorrow and get to see what they can do, n if they won't help then complain that they are holding his money.
He does seem genuine, I think he is just a young lad who is concerned and wants a paper trail

Aye but if it goes wrong for him - he has the bike. If it's a scam you get no bike and no money.

Maybe guy does not have money in the bank account, but want to use his credit card - using paypal he can do this.

One way to not loose money is to tell him, that he needs to cover paypal costs and you will not agree for money to be sent as a gift.

Sometimes I find it easier to do it through paypal.

For example I breed reptiles and people very often pay me in paypal, biggest transaction was 800 quid - never ever had any problem.

In the end you can draw up sale agreement with note sold as seen, in case when something goes wrong.

Didn't think of this actually, but good point you make about credit card.

If you do go paypal make sure you draw up a sold-as-seen contract, and for safe measure probably best to photocopy things like V5 and print out transaction confirmation just so you got paper copies of everything incase things (log book or money etc) go missing

No. You should not use PayPal for large amounts of money. They will always side with the buyer, and you will be left with no bike and no money when he claims it back. It would be mental to even consider it.

As per previous replies - cash on collection only.

The fact that you've made this thread because there's an internal alarm bell ringing should tell you enough.

The force, use it.

Check why it's with paypal - if it's in paypal they should be able to withdraw to a bank account, unless of course there's something dodgy about it.

If it's a credit card, they should be able to withdraw money from a cash machine and the extra costs probably won't be too different to what you'd be paying by paypal - not sure how it works for large amounts sent as a 'gift'.

If your buyer had opened a dispute, you would have had an £800 problem. You've been lucky so far.

CASH only.

10% or £150 deposit by paypal - the rest in cash on delivery/collection

That way you win.

I have to ask;

1, Why did you offer paypal as a payment option on the listing?

2, Did you offer a delivery option on the listing also? Hence why he is asking you to drop it off.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but you need to be very clear when selling items that are essentially 'Sold as Seen'

If he insists on paying by paypal either:

1, Cancel the transaction and refund his payment. Then Re-List.

2, Withdraw the funds into your account before he collects the bike. This will stop Ebay clawing back your funds but they will pursue if it goes t!ts up.

Good Luck!! Thumbs Up

eBay makes you offer PayPal on every listing now, there's no way to take it off and even saying that you dont accept it as payment in your ad is technically against Da Roolz.

Most people still do it though.
