It's a fact of riding. Worrying about it won't help. If anything it makes you more likely to crash as you're not concentrating properly.

Same could be said for crossing the road, driving the car, flying your rocketship or taking an evening stroll in the park. Its all a risk, could happen anywhere, anytime.

Thinking about those things while riding.. they can only make you more aware because of the dangers but if it gets to you too much, it can stop you enjoying it. If it really gets to you, maybe riding isnt something for you.

Just sometimes I think about the cost to repair the bike if I crash and that makes me back off. As for broken bones, they mend for free. Laughing

rode my first bike 28 years ago. I've had one proper crash in a million miles and that was when i was 16.

Riding like a dick is the answer, it works for me.

I think being a little scared is a good thing, it can make you slightly more sensible. For sure it's something you have to think about with riding. I find you have to plan for any and all situations, car in front? where's your exit if he suddenly stops? are you too close? who's behind you? any junctions coming up? a lot of it is predictive and learning how people react so you see what they'll do before they do it. I think G says it a bit, but invest in your brain and knowledge rather than just safety gear - i.e. prevent the need of the gear by stopping the accident.

It's still dangerous, but as others say, you could get killed on a plane, stabbed in a park, fall down stairs etc. Horse riding is much more dangerous. Dont get me wrong, i'm not dismissing the dangers, but for me, the payoff vs the risk means I ride bikes, I couldn't imagine life without them to be quite honest.

Twice, in two accidents (my only two) i've been more concerned about the bike than me, odd really! First one hurt after, second one didn't but second one I had a car come rather close to me!

This as well! I've often found riding like a loon has seen me go around things before they've even noticed i'm there, with good forward obs this can work quite well I think. On occasion i've slowed down from fairly hairy speeds and had to deal with cars doing dickish things that i've not had at speed (obviously giving yourself more room helps a LOT!).

I'm not sure if this is a troll or not, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Yes coming off worries me, but if I spent the whole time thinking about the risks then I wouldn't be concentrating on where I'm going.

I wear proper protective gear and a good Shoei helmet then go and enjoy the ride.

edit: Of course invest in your own skills and ride defensively as well.

Before my first (an only) off I was worried about my wellbeing. Now I'm just worried about the bloody insurance mess. My accident was a year ago and the case is STILL open even after a court date. Screw you whiplash claiming van driver Middle Finger

99.999% of riders have had an off (at sometime in their life) and ended up sideways instead of upright, but the vast majority are still here to continue riding.
Always be aware that it might happen and it may hurt, but dont let it stop you?
Staying aware of that fact and staying aware of other road users will keep you a lot safer.
Ride to within your limits and get the training you need to stay safe.

Or hide in your bedroom until the nasty bike goes away Laughing Thumbs Up

Coming off only worries me when I do something silly. I've not been riding long and gone into some corners a little fast, shit myself at the time but after it straightens out (and the obligatory grazing of the knee obviously) I feel good for getting away with it!

Of course sometimes it's a lesson learnt, taking motorway roundabouts with a big bastard lorry to the left and wondering how it would feel to be tangled up in the wheels.

Coming off don't worry me as I wear PPE.

Hitting something when I come off worries me. But I as a man I can only concentrate on one thing at any given time. So I concentrate on the road / route ahead.

Death / disability is a possibility while on a bike. But it also a possibility while walking down stairs. If you ride like a tool all the time then you are increasing the risk of it happening.

I prefer to ride sensible (although some would disagree) most of the time and keep the crazy stuff for the right place at the right time.

I was walking the dog (alone) in Epping Forest the other day.

It was really nice, we had a good time, I had a thermos of coffee and a good book, found a nice dappled glade off the beaten track a bit.

But all I could think about was Rachel Nickell ... and I kept worrying that someone was going to creep up on me while I was sat daydreaming, and cave my head in with a branch.

Danger is what you make of it.

Don't really think about it - you only live once and (as Rogerborg is fond of saying) this isn't a trial run.

I'm a lot more concerned about how my family and girlfriend would cope were I to fall off and injure myself badly or kill myself - concession to that is being as careful as possible and doing my best to skew the odds in my favour Smile.

Mine was 29 years ago and I had to wait until I was 27yr for my biggy. Couple of stitches at 16 yrs and ripped jeans at 17yrs but that is all.

Fell off mine the other day. Head-butted the floor and immediately thought "There goes my new helmet." Once I got over the initial mind-numbing pain of having my foot ran over I was more concerned with the damage to my bike.

Gonna be off the bike for 6weeks or so now, but still can't wait to get back on it.

I don't think about it, except when I'm taking a pushing through a speedy corner and wondering if the tyre has enough grip. Then I usually think about the bits I'd need to replace on my bike if it went down Very Happy
Been off twice, walked away twice, had to fix bike twice. Nothing to really worry about Thumbs Up

Being a bit thick and not dwelling on maybes. Cool Confused

At least you got back on sir, I've luckily not even nearly come off yet (i expect it to happen at some point though) it's probably due to me being a boring rider!

When I had my accident in 2009 the bloke who got my mobile out of my jacket told me to stop worrying about my bike, it'll fix later and I said yeah but I fix for free. Laughing
