Just saw a biker get lifted off his bike

by a cager not looking properly before pulling out, wasn't pleasant. The bike was crushed to nothing from the impact, yellow Hornet (I think) and the biker just lay there spread out on the road.

Those in cars need to be more aware of bikers.

Wish the guy all the best and think I'm going to start wearing a hi-vis when it's dark out, maybe give myself a better chance at being spotted.

Hopefully the guy will be alright.

Tell us something we don't already know.... But its just as bad when driving a car Twisted Evil

Hi-viz is only any good when lights shine on the reflective strips in the dark..... So anyone pulling out of a side road still won't see you Embarassed

Still at least when you are laid in the road, they show up....

Before I put a nob-rot jihad on you, why didn't you stop to help, or at least offer yourself as a witness?

poor person, Fingers crossed for them. Just goes to show that you can have the brightest colour bike and that means nothing, the hi-vis, as I beleive was previously mentioned, will be exactly the same.

Gotta agree with roger though, not enough people stop to help these days.

If you actually witnessed the smash, i.e. you saw the crash occur , not just the aftermath of bits/people lying around then give the local plod shop a ring and offer yourself as an independent witness. I'm sure the guy on the bike would be grateful to have a bike friendly witness on board.

I was on a coach otherwise I would of pulled over and made sure nobody moved him as people seem to always try and move injured people to the side of the road opposed to blocking it with their cars.

So hopefully, this is a valid reason to avoid your jihad?

I will ring the local station tomorrow if I remember to try and find out if he was ok/offer my account of the incident.

Valid point, I will deffo ring tomorrow on my dinner break at work and offer myself as witness.

Would write it down but was just a case of cager pulled out without looking, failed to see/stop, hit biker. Cager then got out and others ran to the scene. Then coach drove off.

I'll let you all know how it goes. Hopefully all will be well!

Urgh, I'd hate to not be able to stop and help, that can't have been easy on you.

Please do get in touch with the local constabulary, you could make a big difference to the guy's life.

There is NO valid argument that suggests Hi Viz is worth the talk.
It is an Urban Myth/load of shite.
I wear a rather gay-rish anorak from Heinous Gericke which keeps wind and rain off and gives me somewhere to put loose items for safe keeping.
People still shit all over my space on the road and pull out on top of me.

There is no substitute for good observation. That will keep you alive more reliably than Hi-Viz will.

And you should always stop if you see an accident. Even though there's not much you can do. You will not know this unless you stop and offer to help.

Biker was unconscious on way to hospital but stable, not allowed to give me any further information

Gave statement, asked who I "believed" was at fault, asked if I would act as witness if it went to court said I would, though they believe that it wont go that far.

As for the vis, I've decided against it, far too many say it's pointless so I will just stick to riding like a loon and staying alert.

It's not an either/or proposition, though no doubt the anti-div brigade will fire in with the "risk compensation" argument.

There's no compelling evidence in favour of wearing hi-vis, annoyingly because no statistically significant study has actually collated enough evidence on it. MAIDs made an attempt to assess visibility in crashes, but didn't record the use of hi vis in the non-crash control group, so it's not possible to draw any conclusions.

However, by the same token, the evidence against wearing hi-vis is even more anecdotal - risk compensation, dazzle pattern camouflage - and my anecdotal belief is that the anti position almost always starts from the position that "it makes you look like a div". Which it does. Very Happy

Got given a hi vis the other day ...

Sometimes i use it in the day under an open leather jacket, mainly for warmth when underneath iit is a normal top.

I've mainly got it, as if i have to travel at night, it is in the main an A to B affair, and not a hoon, at night i believe they work well in conjuntion with other skills !

DON'T wear one and assume your be seen, it's an aid that may work, not something you should wear thinking ' how can they not see me ' Thumbs Up
