First post is sadly a bad one
So today I returned to my bike, after having parked it in the town centre, to find my handle bars bent, mirror on a weird angle, indicator on one side completely smashed and other various scratches and scuffs. This accompanied by a nice white scrape on the curb edge near my bike meant some moron had knocked my bike over and picked it back up. I asked the restaurant it was parked in front of (baring in mind the front wall of this restaurant is pretty much all a window) but no one had seen a thing?
Disgruntled with the lack of CCTV footage covering that part of the road I returned to my bike to find a small piece of paper lodged between my throttle and brake lever. "Ring Alan on 07**********".
Oh at least they were kind enough to leave some details so they can pay for damages you think? Wrong.
Turns out this guy just witnessed the car swerve into my bike while avoiding a bus in some weird circumstance? Then drive off. Luckily the guy that left his details was in the car behind and caught the reg plate and decided to pick my bike up and leave me the note.
So there is some light at the end of the tunnel just need to wait for him to get back to me with the reg number.
Whats the procedure here? Get reg number and some more contact details, contact police get police ref number then contact insurance, give them the police ref number and let them do the leg work?
Guess I should count myself lucky Alan had the decency to stop and take the reg! |

Alan sounds like a good guy. Get the reg and then get onto the cops. If you give Alan's details to the cops and the cops contact him you might find he 'can't remember'. Get the reg first. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

What if Alans note was just a cover up cos he crashed into it himself and didn't want others to think he was driving off. Then he came up with the cunning plan of picking out some random car with a dent in the right place and giving their numberplate?

Sadly, we've seen case after case where CCTV operators couldn't be bothered or just flat refused to provide footage, once for the hilarious reason that it would infringe the rights of the criminal.
I really do wish you the best of luck, but you'll have to be tenacious to get anything done. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Quick update, seems the man wrote the number plate down wrong as it took him a while to find a pen, it was dark and the the number plate was muddy.
Reported it to the police and they've put a request in for the CCTV of the area and should hear back "between a few days or weeks" *sigh* |

Hey, they're (maybe) going to have a look, that's actually pretty good going. Cold comfort, but it's more than I'd expected. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Get him to tell you whatever he wrote down, also get him to give you a description of the car.
Go on one of the HPI check websites and keep entering different variations of the registration plate until you get a result that could match the description of the car. For free, using my bike's registration, I find out that it's: Honda, CBR 125 R-4, 2004, 124cc.
Maybe you'll get lucky that way. Maybe if you find a "possible" registration and tell it to the guy, he may remember and go "Ah, that's right!"

Now, don't quote me on this because I'm not 100% sure that I am right.
You appear in that CCTV footage, ergo you have every right to view it. I have a feeling that I have heard somewhere that it's a legal right of yours to have access to this footage.
I'd be tempted to go direct to the company with the CCTV (or the council if it was their CCTV) and request the footage. Visits to companies may be necessary and their bullshit "we don't need to show you the CCTV, you're wrong!" will need to be ignored. Become enough of a nuisance so that they give you the CCTV in order to get rid of you.
With the CCTV in hand you have everything that you need and you could just hand that straight over to the police. I would try and get the footage sooner than later though. I don't know if there is any legal requirement on how long CCTV footage must be stored for; they could delete footage regularly to clear up space!
