I'm going to see a 2003 model at the week end, just out of curiosity at the moment with it being a friend of a friend's, it has 23,000 on the clock, full service history, all old mot's etc and is very clean. It was bought back as a cat D due to fairing and air duct damage following a drop which has been replaced with new parts.
It has System 3 Data Alarm/ immobilizer, Rear hugger, Scot oiler.

Not sure if its my type of bike, is it classed as a sports or sports touring?, if anybody has had one what are they like to ride as an everyday bike?, is the seating position right over the tank or is it a bit more upright?, tank range? It looks very nice from what I remember, I'm gonna have a go on it anyway for myself but would appreciate a few comments from the more experienced folk here.

He is looking for around £1,200 for the bike which to me seems a good price if it suits me, I know I wont be able to ride a very low crouched over style bike over a great distance as my wrists just wont take it anymore at my age...loll. I regularly do 270 mile trip up to Middlesbrough from London on my Divvy which is perfect for the job even though its an oldie bike.

Cheers,

I was looking at buying one when I got my ZZR. However I went off them because the fuel economy is pretty dire (30mpg at best).

The early ones had a crap FI map, which ruined the reputation and made them cheap, but they fixed that in 2001 and you can fix it with a laptop and a cheap cable anyway.

They are technically sport bikes, but by todays standards are closer to a sport tourer.

If the mpg doesn't put you off then go ride one!

I had two. One blew up because I bought it as a damaged repairable... but the second one was pretty good.

It was comfortable, and I rode to Scotland and back on it. The fuelling was a bit of a pain in the backside, but it only really manifested itself at very low speeds as a sort of jerkiness and a slight pause before the engine responded to small throttle increments. In practise this means that you open the throttle a bit, nothing happens so you open it a bit more and then it cuts in with more power than you were expecting because you opened it more. If you can train yourself not to do this, then its fine.

The handling of the bike was exemplary, and was very confidence inspiring. The brakes were excellent and really only the fuelling and the looks let it down. As a long distance all rounder it was excellent really, if a little bit bland.

The problem I had with it is that it was very very easy to go fast on. I later had a Speed Four which I really liked because it had all of the good bits of the TT but with a little bit more sensation of speed. If you want to do distance and not worry about the sensation of speed then the TT is the one to go for. If not, then I'd look for a Speed Four, which are generally a good bargain.

The bike is alright I suppose, fuel is terrible though Laughing

I also found insuring my 750 which gets better MPG and goes faster/looks better costs far less Laughing Admittedly you pay an additional £300 on top of the TT600 but still.

Waffles had one, think it broke. Dunc had one... again, think it broke, stevekingchef has one... it broke Laughing

I think what we can take from this is if you want a sport tourer get a ZZR600 or a VFR. If you want something a little faster, get a CBR600R or Pre-636 ZX6R.

Wouldn't worry about the fueling thing, as said you can fix it with a cable and laptop.

£1200 seems really good.

The charging systems are made of cheese though. If it's not had a new stator or reg/rec it WILL need one as its only a matter of time before one of them breaks.

I'd go for it at that price.

Bit more pricey, but the generic 2001 CBR600F would probably be "your bag" Thumbs Up

But you do get a bit of Honda quality in there. The only Triumph I now want is the Daytona 600 from 04... I miss it Laughing

As I recall all of the three bikes that broke all had bodged wiring looms...

Mine broke but didn't have a bodged wiring loom. The reg/rec went and it pissed oil everywhere, it was an easy fix but I was fed up with the bike spending more time in bits than on the road so sold it on as a spares or repair project. I think it ditching me at the side of the M25 when it ran out of electricity early Sunday morning was the last straw, I went bike shopping that afternoon and put a deposit down on the gixer.

In general though it was a comfy bike, bit rubbish on the fuel and things seemed to corrode quite easily. Watch out for the finish on some parts as the stock finish is shite (pillion peg hangars for example) and the tabs to hold the fairings on are made of cheese therefore snap easily.

I had one for around 25,000 miles. The bike was great. I bought it for a grand with apcIII fitted and the fueling was great. The handling and brakes were very good too. Better than the similar year CBR and zx6r I tried.

I bought it with 25000 miles in the time I owned it I had to replace two coils, the head covert gasket and that was it.

I had a Speed Four. The build quality was excellent, but the stator did go tits up on me. The charging system side of the loom is crap as standard, and needs beefing up.

Fantastic bikes, but they do have problems.

£13 cable and TuneECU will sort the fueling if it's not already been done.

The problem mine had was that the wiring between the stator and reg/rec melted, causing it not to run charge which caused it to die. i fixed that for the price of a new wiring loom, about £30.

The next issue i had was a dodgy ignition plug, bu the next owner (who was on here) sorted it easy enough.

They are amazingly good bikes, handle very well, sound amazing and go like shit off a stick...

But they do only get around 35mpg.

One time i filled the tank, and got 85 miles before it hit reserve. on the cbr i can do double that and still have plenty left.

If you're not worried about the fuel consumption then get one, definitely.

With regards to the speed/power, i found mine slightly slower at acceleration than the CBR600f of the same year, but mine topped out around 160-165. Pretty sure someone had been messing around with the sprockets on mine though.

Honestly, ride one and you'll see what i'm on about. just don't cry when something goes wrong, and fix it.

One point i'd better make, is watch for crash damage on the right side. there was something about if it went down on the right side with the engine running, it could cause excessive wear on the big end bearings IIRC.

I want to confirm this.

The cause of all my problems were as follows, courtesy of the previous owner:

https://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/246944_1905366287610_1645368025_1802764_3335028_n.jpg

Sorted with this:

and the fuelling issues were easy to sort.

why's that..?

In my opinion they got a bit harder and sportier around that time. So less sports-tourer ish. Not saying that's a bad thing though!

Right, went to see the bike this morning, it was very clean and sounded sweet, took it out for 30mins and I have to say the acceleration blew me away compared to my divvy and the handleing was sublime, brakes were scary sharp. Unfortunatley I did not feel as comfortable as I do on the divvy, its just a bit to sports orientated for me I definatley need something a bit more upright for daily use and the odd long run. Loved the available power though and it was very easy to go quicker than you thought you were going. So I walked away and will just keep my eye out for the right bike.
