Admiral this time. I got an auto renewal charged to my account despite having SORNed the car. Their renewal letter mentioned a renewal confirmation in bold so I ignored it (reading it carefully it does mention auto renew, but it's less prominent than the confirmation bit). Rang up CS who weren't so good but did transfer me to the renewals department.

Renewals just refunded the full amount minus £22.50 and promised to refund the £22.50 as soon as they get a copy of the SORN confirmation.

Much better than the some have had I guess, just glad I'd got the cash in the bank to cover it!
