PostPosted: 00:50 - 17 Mar 2012    Post subject: Motorcycle Safety Wear Survey Reply with quote

Hi,

A friend of mine who rides a scooter has asked me if I could post a link to her motorcycle safety wear survey for her masters degree. I've ok'ed posting this with the mods.

This study aims to examine British motorcyclists' use of and attitudes towards safety wear. There are no current figures to suggest the level and specific use of safety wear in UK riders. Obtaining an idea of wear-rates will help to improve rider awareness of available safety wear.

Before anyone gets defensive, this survey is not being used to force anyone to wear safety gear they don't want to.

Please visit www.motorcyclesafetywear.co.uk
This study will take no longer than 10 minutes.
Please pass this to any biker friends or family.

Thanks

Question 2... I am a UK student.
. Yes
. No

I answer No and it doesn't let me go any further... so only students are supposed to fill this out? Rolling Eyes Nice representative sample there!

Done. Didn't really get the innocent/guilty thing in some questions though, so I just chose the middle option.

There were some really crap questions:

"Riders I most respect wear full motorcycle safety wear..."

I don't respect any riders, why the fuck should I?

I quit part way through - not impressed.

No not applicable thing for the multi choice questions about winter and summer saftey wear so could quite easily lead to misinterpretation of answers and misinterpretation of results

Could probably do with defining Winter and summer conditions as well. For me winter = wet therefore no leathers or ice = no riding (for me)

A sunny winters day however and on come leathers.

A couple of questions don't seem to make sense either

Filled it out anyway

The Q2 I saw asked me if I was a UK resident.

I also didn't complete the survey, it was asking me questions I've never considered, either because I don't think them relevent, or they were poorly worded, eg. Q. "I will be buying safety equipment in the next 3 months" A. On a scale of 1-7, strongly agree or disagree.

I might buy something, if I have a crash and damage something, or if something wears out, or if I'm feeling a bit flush, or if a bargain comes up, but I don't see that answer falling within the scope of an 'agree/disagree' response.

Q. Is more thought with the style of questioning needed? A. 1=Strongly Agree 7= Strongly Disagree............................1

Maybe I'm just being a bit stupid, but I can't see how, unless the results are used as a stick to beat us with.

So you can guarantee the results wont be used by anyone, whether or not connected with the researcher, to try and force through more unwanted legislation?

Although I wish your friend luck with their masters, and I feel wearing the correct kit is sensible, I don't wish to give anybody any information that could later be used against me. It's bad enough being forced to wear a helmet but give some people half a chance and they wouldn't hesitate to stop us even looking at a bike unless we're fully kitted up in pre-approved, moted, and very expensive body armour.

(Or am I just being paranoid?)

I would think 99.9% of degree subject theses never get off the page, so I don't think you have much to worry about.

Of course, there is always a risk that someone pays attention to some poorly conducted research, which is why I called fail, on the off chance that anyone of any import is watching.

Utter crap. I'm not a student so my views are not valid.

So I, with 35 years riding experience am not suitable to give my views but a snot nosed brat with 3 months experience who doesn't know his ass from his elbow is (sorry students Razz ).

That would worry me that the results could be used out of context.

In truth, I wouldn't want to inflict such a badly-written survey on anyone, least of all friends or family.

While the premise is sound, your friend really needs to learn how to write and address questions properly. Here's a hint; repetition is not the way to do it.

Question 2 is actually UK Resident. This is not a study aimed at students only. The only education question is later on in the survey.

The reason for these questions is made clear at the end of the survey. Unfortunately if too much information is given at the beginning it will (and this has been shown) influence results. If you neither agree or disagree with any of the questions then you can choose number 4.

Unfortunately this template is a recognised questionnaire design (Likert scale). It is a bit annoying, and you've probably seen them before in job interviews ect. However they are very good at getting peoples opinions/views. The repetition of some questions is also a characteristic of this type of questionnaire.

I brought this up too. It's very valid. We all wear different gear depending on weather and even mood. This study is a relatively small one compared to PHD level. My friend has written in her dissertation that more information relating to seasons (and a lot of other stuff) will need to be looked into. I would answer the questions with the current, dry, spring weather in mind.

Thelostone wrote:

I can understand the paranoia, it was my reaction too. I don't want to be forced to wear gear and my friend doing the study doesn't either. This information will more than likely help educate newer riders. Have you seen the "Think Bike - Safety wear" fliers? The page at the end of the survey will explain the study. But this survey isn't designed to just gain numbers of people wearing safety gear. My friend is doing Health Psychology, that should help you understand the direction of the study.

"The Department of Psychology". Jog on, that's about 3 degrees removed from anything that will benefit me or anybody else, ever.

Well, she got the same random or self contradictory answers that I always give to Psychlo evaluations. It's all right, like all Psykers, she'll just discard any data points that don't support the pre-determined conclusion. Thumbs Up

worried or calm... how about 'in a lot of pain'.
seriously how injured.... if i am crippled from the neck down worried or calm is an understated!

there are loads more stupid questions... also the winter summer... could of been do you ride in bad weather, no, next section, done.

I am more worried that the survey was written by someone working on a masters degree...

I always try to help out fellow students and complete surveys, but that just went on forever Shocked

That could of been easily condensed into about 1/5th of the questions. I hope your friend doesn't do their dissertation/thesis in the same way.

The layout just messed with my eyes, and I don't appreciate the repeat questions or the format. I'd like to have filled it in, but I don't have the patience to do so.

Again thanks to everyone for filling the survey out. Some of the comments that are being left at the end of the survey have been useful and will be used in the study to indicate improvements.

There lies the point of this question. Some feel they are more or less likely to have an accident compared to others/the average. This then throws up interesting questions on whether it's the length of experience, bike size, type of riding ect that influence this. It will then be interesting to see if these people that think they're low or high risk have diffent safety wear habits.

If you don't feel you're higher or lower risk then simply choose 4, middle of the scale.

Even more worrying is she graduated highest in her class with a first honours and has had a paper published on HPV vacinations. These questions were checked and approved by two respected lecturers in the health phychology field to fit the Likert scale and the lastest agreed thoeries... Although, maybe we should consult you next time Wink

Coincidentally, I also graduated top of my class, with a 1st class Hons degree AND I have papers published, doesn't mean I know how to write a survey Laughing .

In her defence, a masters degree is little more than the last resort for those who can't figure out what to do with their bachelors degree and health pyschology is fanny pandering pseudo-science. All that being considered, the survey was at exactly the level I would expect.

HTH Thumbs Up .

You probably should. A survey that selects for Asperger's spackers doesn't give you representative results.

If you think that's a joke, well, it turns out that I already have a Masters degree - graduated at the top of the Postgraduate Diploma class that fed into it, since we're bringing that up - and can recognise mumbo jumbo pseudo science technobabble by daylight.

Tell her good luck with it though, I'm sure it'll be ever so productive.

Sorry but it's a shit survey where the questions are blurred into each other so there will be a lack of differentiation in the results. I also got bored of it where the questions are pretty much the same.

I've not got any qualifications in psychology, yet even I'm aware that Aspergers and Autism is a wide spectrum disorder and therefore is very hard to quantify.

The question is though what has this got to do with motorcycle safety wear? An area that is quite quantifiable.

Rogerborg wrote:

A similar study in Australia resulted in some very useful information. This was then used to help educate new and older riders on the uses of safety wear. I'm not sure if a follow up study was carried out, but if it helps by saving a kids hands as he wasn't aware of types or function of gloves then I'd say it was a success.

sickpup wrote:

Unfortunately this is a characteristic of these surveys. I'm sure most people have done a few of these (I've done a few for job interviews). They will ask you the same questions rephrased a couple of times. I'm not 100% why, other than it provides more accurate data. Also this study is quite focused at the moment. The PHD version will be a lot more in depth, with a wider focus.

As this study is just a preliminary one, comments are very useful. As Polarbear said, BCF has a wide range of bike experience (and inexperience). So if you think of something that you would add, subtract or change, please mention it in the comments section at the end of the survey with some detail and even solutions. Comments made in the survey can be used in the study. And some of them have been really good. Unfortunately forum comments can't. Comments such as "This is rubbish" help no one. It'll all be helpful when the PHD version is made. Thumbs Up

Thanks
