Thinking of becoming a courier, thoughts?

I'm getting a bit bored with the office job, I was thinking that as I commute a fair distance everyday I might start doing some courier work instead. It looks quite easy. Using a satnav I reckon I could do one drop every 30 minutes in London, so working 12 hours would mean 24 drops, so it ought to pay quite well.
Also, because it's such easy work I could probably work 7 days a week - I'd basically be doing something I enjoyed so it wouldn't even feel like a chore!
Would it be best to set myself up as a limited company? This would probably be good for future expansion, I could sub-contract out all of the extra work to someone else that way.

Funnily enough I was thinking about doing the same at one point until I actually had a good talk with a motorcycle courier and they put me off. The pay is not great and as much as we enjoy riding our bikes as often as possible the bloke I talked to said that changes when it becomes have to ride instead of want to ride.

You could have covered one of the 5 jobs i had last week for me.

Get a call 11am in Salisbury. Collect 2:30pm in plymouth. Deliver 1:30 am 750 miles later in Aberdeen.

6 hours sleep before getting up and having to find a front tyre before the 550 mile ride home

£190 on fuel and then travelodge for the night, a tyre and i'll be paid in 4-6 weeks if i'm lucky and the customer doesn't go down the shitter first.

Has its ups and downs.

Riding out to marden air ambulance, dropping off at pembury hospital in good weather is lovely...riding maidstone to lancing with a stupid size box on the back when its getting a bit dull, cold & windy is grim.

Riding back from brighton, in the dark on a bone stock YBR, with a large box on the back, in the rain was pretty bad aswell.

Starting couriering in london is asking for death! Used to do it in the van...work wont give me central london work full stop till i've got a full licence. You wont enjoy it all the time, it will feel like a chore, and working on call 24/7 kills your social life. It would be best to work for a company to get started. Satnavs are a shit idea, better to pull over and use google maps on iPhone. More accurate i find. Memorise the next section of the route. Account for the time it takes walking around the tower block, getting some silly twat to sign for the package, load and unload time.

Pay wise maidstone-brighton earns me about £50 before fuels taken out, and the local hospital runs which i spend most of my time doing make around £9 a go. Ive earned £520 in a week, and £34 in a week. Company has a shit week, you struggle to pay the bills.

Bike wise the sensible people at my company run duvilles & pan euro's. This said you can do it with anything with enough willpower and bungee cords


If you're unemployed and cant find anything else do it...but i wouldnt give up a stable income for it. Might be better when im able to do the long runs, idk.

I did it for a while in the mid 80's.
Back then you could make a lot of money.
Earnings of £400 were the norm amongst the hardened experienced guys, which back then was an awful lot of money.
Now, certainly in London, it's not the job it once was.
I was chatting to a courier recently who said that the old timers just can't compete with the eastern Europeans who are coming here and working for peanuts.
