Depends on the price aswell.
but 57k miles isn't a massive ammount its a yam they have pretty decent engines, as long as it was looked after itll be fine for another 100k miles easily. ____________________ GOOD GAME BODYGUARD: https://i.imgur.com/8WePGgf.jpg

If I was buying a bike with that mileage I'd want to get it up on stands and check all the chassis bearings (wheels, swingarm, headset) as well as all the other consumables. If it's had the suspension rebuilt or replaced and all the consumables changed then all you've got to worry about is engine wear.
Basically what I'm saying is I'd buy a bike with 57,000 miles if all the bits that will be well worn out by then haven't also done 57,000 miles
People get hung up on being able to identify engine problems on second hand bikes when to be honest if the simple things to check like tyres, brake discs, C+S, fork seals, rear shock and headset bearings are knackered those parts alone might well cost you more than a replacement engine or a rebuild anyway. ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |

57K and a full service history on a clean looking bike would be preferable than £27K on a bike with no service history. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

Personally I'd pay more for lower mileage, rather than play the "I don't have receipts, but my mate Baz done the headstock, you can call him" game. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I know mileage doesn't count for everything, and I know services are the more important thing.
But I'm looking at a 1996 Thundercat which has 57,000 miles on the clock.
Is there anything with the thundercat which is likely to trouble me at that sort of mileage? Is it worth me just paying a bit more for a lower mileage model? |
Might start suffering from second gear issues some time in the future, but if looked after the engines are good for 100k.
If its cheap, get it. If not, pay another £500 and you'll find something newer with half the mileage. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Its on ebay at £860 at the moment, with a day left. I'm probably going to hang in there and keep hunting til something less risky comes along!
thanks for the advice guys! |
It would be an okay buy at less than £1k.
But as I said for £500 more you open your options massively. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Uh, so you'd be bidding to buy, not to view?
An eBay advert is really no different from any other: "Bike for sale, come see and and offer me cash if you want it." ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'd worry about the gearbox, not the engine. Experience talking here ____________________ Current: 2007 VFR800; Ex: 2001 YZF600R Thundercat

It certainly looks well tidy.

Why would you bid on it more than 5 seconds before the auction ends? Decide how much you'd pay, offer it. Don't get caught up in auction rush of thinking that it must be worth £50 more than the highest offer, that's how you end up paying over the odds.
Actually, why would you buy a vehicle it through eBay at all? View, negotiate a cash in hand price to test ride, ride, if it's a good 'un ask "Do you want to wait and see if some fantasy bidder ever turns up with more money, or just give me the V5 now?" ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
