Hypothetically what would happen if you were caught practicing on your 125 in preparation for your CBT, without insurance on a quiet street?

for example, if I have my license and my mate wanted me to help him with the very basics to calm his nerves and get him comfortable with starting, getting into gear and indicating, would the police arrest him on sight and take the bike or would it be a case of turning a blind eye?

This is all hypothetical of course Neutral

Depends on the cop.

Rather than do it on a quiet street why not take it to a closed industrial park, or something of the sort? At weekends before I was 17 I went to industrial estates to practice for my driving lessons...

I took my cbr down to a industrial estate to practice after i didnt pass.
Honestly, theres no point. Let him try it with someone who knows how to instruct them properly first, then let them practice if they need it.

Firstly, the T in CBT is TRAINING not TEST. There is no need to practice before hand. You are taught to a certain standard but you cannot fail. If you want to do anything in preparation, read the highway code, learn your roadsigns and take a practice bike theory test and hazard perception test (available on DSA website)

But secondly, anywhere that the public has access to is technically illegal... so supermarket car park or industrial estate you HAVE to be insured. Only private property that is inaccessible to Johnny Public can be used if you are not insured.

What He Said ^
Theres NO NEED to 'Practice' for CBT... its BASIC TRAINING...

presumption is you know fuck all to begin with, and not much of it about bikes, and intension is to teach you a 'bit' about bikes, so that if we've done the job right, you go away with a completion cert in your mits at least KNOWING you know fuck all!

Riding without insurance is a BIG 'though shall not'

To all extents and purposes it just ent worth the risk; its one of the cardinal sins for which they have little tolerance and suggestion they can book you for it, and impound your bike, brings a tear of joy to the feds faces!

Public Road; very bad idea; but ANY 'publically accessible place' from a supermarket car-park to a private works yard, IF some-one calls you in, is deemed 'the public road' as far as the road traffic act.

And to 'practice' for CBT? It would be like giving some-one in the army recruiting office waiting room a self loading rifle and a live grenade to 'play with' so they can 'practice' before boot camp!

Unnecessary and dangerouse!

Old riding addage for you; DONT worry about what comes next; deal with THIS bit of road you can see!

Impatience & rushing is a quick way to get hurt on a bike; so DONT fret; dont get ahead of yourself; be patient and take things as they come.

You dont have to do a thing before CBT, apart from make sure you have the paperwork they require and possibly your baric equipment... worry about that, no more.

CBT will contend with what you need to know or do NEXT, when you get there...

So dont go getting yourself in hot water, trying to wade rivers, before you get to the bridge Laughing

He would get busted for not having a licence and no insurance.

And

You will get busted for allowing him to ride the bike without a licence and no insurance.

They will almost certainly take your bike too.

As above, there's no need for training/preparation before CBT, bar having an open mind of course.

To your hypothetical question, as above again, it's a no go. Realistically though, will you get caught and what could go wrong are the questions.

I have driven my friend's car once (and he rode my bike) on a country lane so quiet and secluded it may as well have been private land. No houses, no parked cars (or driving ones), no pedestrians, no 3rd party witnesses. We had no need to swap, just, I'd never driven a car before and he had never rode a bike. Quick 20 second lesson given to each other and away we went for a minute or two before swapping back, laughing at each other. Laughing

I think you know how wrong it is - don't do it.

There is a scheme in place for people like your mate, it's free, legal and fun - and there's one near you.

Check it out Here.

Just watch the Fail video in for March (Posted in the video section) of the guy who gets on the bike, grinds against the wall before losing balance and coming off. That could be your bike Thumbs Up

Whether they seized the bike will depend on your story.

2 options.

A) He Took it without consent, and you say that, you get the bike returned and get off free, he gets charged with TWOC and riding without a license and insurance.

B) You own up to allowing him, they seize the vehicle, he gets done for no insurance and license, and you get done for allowing somebody to ride with no insurance.

It was hard shaking off the popo chopper but we lost them by diving into the Old Abandoned Flood Channels.

But then came the Morlocks...

Live near some abandoned pit heaps and most of the old works roads are still intact (barely) so had a few little rides of my YBR feeling like Steve McQueen, if you can find a quiet industrial estate or the like then up to you to take the risk it's unlikely to give you much benefit though (I had my dad with 40 years riding experience giving me instruction at the time).

I wouldn't try it - even practicing for my Mod 1 on a completely empty car park in the late afternoon/early evening I had plod pop over for a quick chat.

"That your bike? what you up to? all insured and everything is it?". After a quick "yes sir, practicing sir, yes sir" he checked it on his radio, then once he'd confirmed it was all legal and obviously feeling like he had to say something to assert his authoritah he left with a passing "just keep the noise down then alright".

Reckon some jobsworth probably rang them and they popped by in the hope of an easy nab for no insurance/cbt Razz.

6 points minimum on your friends licence, if he has no full licence (car licence counts as well) or has had said licence for less than 2 years 6 points = automatic licence revoked

Tell him to go have fun at his cbt, he will be taught how to ride on the first half of the day then taken out for a nice little ride, as long as he knows the highway code he should be fine, worst case is he will be called back in for a second day.

He can take his CBT on an automatic, that should cover him for a geared 125 also presuming he's 17+. As for the legality, I almost had my first moped taken off me for this very reason, instead I was given 3 points + £60 fine.

Always treat your bike, like you'd treat your woman, So don't let your mates have a go and don't get 'on' it without protection!
