Ey up. Got my first bike etc on Saturday. Utterly loving it.
Only, when filling up yesterday, I'd perched my helmet on the handlebar and it fell off hitting the floor right on the top. I've got a cbr125 so only a mini bike. My question is this...would that impact warrant now buying a replacement or are they not quite that sensitive?

A lesson has been learnt either way!

A freefall drop from a few feet could equate to hundreds or thousands of G impact, you have no idea what's damaged inside the helmet until you need it to protect your head from thousands of G!

It will be fine - there was nothing inside it to compress the protective bits.

It's not like the helmets are made from glass.

Well this is my point, quite prepared to get a new un. Just wanted to see from people who know helmets more than me if that kind of fall would damage it to the point where you'd replace yours cos if they're sturdy enough to be alright after a couple foot drop, it'd be a waste of a hundred quid to replace it

If I dropped my helmet from my bike, and it hit the floor, I'd replace it immediately (in fact I did a few weeks ago). It's just not worth the risk. I also place my helmet over the mirror if I'm leaving it on the bike while filling up, a lot less likely to go anywhere.

Jobsworth and the safety conscious will tell you to buy a new one

People with realistic amounts of money will tell you to man up

I recall the instructor at my CBT telling us about dropping helmets, how they're only made to withstand one collision and one only, about the polystyrene crap or whatever it is getting compressed flat, so losing its impact taking ability in that spot.

Personally I wouldn't care, i've dropped my helmet maybe twice, its a shit helmet anyway
But I don't/can't go 100mph so I care less
50mph feels slow now i'm used to it, but at first I was like WOWWWWWW

if your helmet was shit and cheap you might aswell get a new one anyway Thumbs Up
I wouldnt fancy dropping a brand new £600 akai helmet then dishing out for a new one "just in case" though

You'll hear utter bollocks spouted by all sides (self included), but in the end this is entirely up to you.

Take the lining out and examine the polystyrene. That's the bit that protects you. Make your decision based on what you can see and feel.

OP, the forum is interestingly split on this issue, you aren't going to get a clear answer either way Very Happy
I was always told by my instructors etc. to replace it if dropped (and I don't think they get kickbacks from Arai et. al.) so I would. Perhaps not immediately though depending on cash... Confused

Here's a clear answer from Snell:

Quote:

"I dropped my helmet! Do I have to go buy a new one?"

Generally the answer is probably not. Helmets are one-use items, but are quite durable otherwise, at least the ones we certify. Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance. Similarly if the helmet falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied, the owner must be aware that some degradation may have occurred. In general, the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside. The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, you avoid hitting stuff with your head. It can be difficult to readily determine if a helmet has been damaged, and the protective capabilities compromised without a thorough inspection by a trained professional. Some manufacturers may provide this service or direct you to these others that can perform these inspections. The Foundation recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it.

Doesn't really matter if you're doing 10mph or 100mph...you can still easily die from a head injury. Rolling Eyes

Thumbs Up +1

I was wearing a well fitting lid when I had a pretty major crash, I still recieved some damage to my brain, that was at 30-35mph but back of my head did hit a curb.

My lids are usually pretty cheap, current one cost £10 and tinted visor was £15 Laughing but its considered disposable to me Thumbs Up

True, I have faith in my brains ability to stop itself from getting hurt, it'll be the wrists and arms that go first Sad

Still wouldn't splash £100+ for a helmet because I dropped it on the floor though!

£10 helmet paddy?!

Same as Paddy, dropped/bashed mine once or twice, but I still feel safe wearing it.

If I came off whilst riding and hit my head, then I'd probably get a new one.

If I came off and didn't hit my head, I wouldn't, similarly if I only slid I probably still wouldn't buy one. Well, not unless the paint job was ruined to the extend that it made me embarrassed to wear it.

But: Your life you choice. Thumbs Up

ultimately is your decision, but because you have decided to post the question on here i can safely guess you are quite concerned about the integrity of the lid so will probably want a new one anyway. have a good look at the lid and see if there are any cracks/splits etc... and make your decision, but if you are unsure then buy a new one as it will very likely b on your mind a lot of the time.

Actually it's barely been on my mind since I posted. I read the owner's manual from HJC when I got home. It says any fall from as low as 4ft can cause damage. I've not measured my bike's height from half a helmet length below my handlebar, but I'm pretty sure it's not so close to 4ft to warrant worrying over. It's also a Kevlar shell, which I'm given to understand is a lot more protective that most types of shell material.

Anyway, you'll probably have already surmised I'm happy to take my chances for now. I think it was on here I read (could have been elsewhere) that most damage happens to a helmet when there's a head in it. There was nothing in mine, so adds further to my comfort that my small drop won't have caused much issue.

I always thought i would replace a helmet after i dropped it until i dropped mine. It just seemed a bit pointless to spend £70 on something that i wasnt even sure i needed.
I think the whole thing that you have to buy a new one is a load of crap, unless the helmet actually took a serious hit. until i see anyone run tests on a helmet i wont buy a new one.

Hear hear (only £110 instead of £70... and that was reduced by £60)

I always have, dropped mine off bike seat hight and smashed the rear spoiler thing off, probably fine to use but when I had some spare cash I replaced it anyway, same for when I was knocked off my bike before that.

At the end of the day, looks shit half broke anyway so may as well replace it Laughing.

i bought a cheap helmet because i knew i would eventually drop it a couple of times. The top air vents smashed when i dropped it, thats the only reason il get a new one.

I find it odd when some people balance there helmets off their bike seats and handlebars though. Its as if your asking it to get knocked off. Even if it doesnt damage the structure of the foam, it will scratch the visor. I always put mine on the floor...

My view on this is that if the helmet doesn't look obviously damaged like shell having a dent in it, then I wouldn't worry about it. It will be fine.

Some people seem to have more money than sense and replacing a 500 hundred quid helmet because it fell off a seat, two feet to the ground is madness.

Mind you, I think anyone who spent 500 pounds plus on a helmet hasn't got a brain worth protecting anyway!

A friend of mine was exiting a roundabout the other day at 50mph.. a car cut him up and he bounced of the side of it and landed on the curb a couple of hundred yards away. Unfortunately he broke his neck and died instantly.

It doesnt matter if you are doing 50mph or 100mph, if you hit something there is a high chance of getting seriously injured with or without a helmet regardless of its condition.

BUT you will have a much higher chance of coming out of a crash alive with a spotless helmet and protective gear.

I will only throw away a helmet if the shell is cracked or i have fallen off and hit my head. Light chipping, scratches or scuffs do not affect the interior so the helmet would still be just as effective.
