Bought this bike cheap for a long trip and I am really impressed with it quite fast and really really smooth.

Wanted a fireblade, but for a long trip needed a tourer this bike came in cheap so had to have it, Hornet gone

nice bike, not too sure about that exhaust though?

Also, just wondering... how many miles did you travel?!

oh my mis-understanding! I thought you travelled far to pickup the bike. Like from Scotland to Plymouth or something o.O

They're nice bikes, a friend had an 08 one of those. They're pretty rapid, lots of torque, he's a sensible but good rider and could show up a lot of people on it. Decent fuel range, good comfort and easy to add luggage on.

The times i'd followed it, I could get quite caught out if he suddenly went off because the torque of it just barrelled it along.

iirc the CBF1000 was the second bike I'd ever ridden (on a demo day) after my DAS

REALLY nice bike, with a smooth forgiving ride, but still with plenty of get-up-and-go when you needed it Wink

I really fancy one for commuting and touring. I took a 2007 one for a two day test ride at the end of last year and fell in love with the engine. The bars were a teeny bit wider than the ideal for nipping through the queues and the weight of the bike makes it less nimble than I’m used to, but ¾ of my journey is motorway so it’d be perfect for that.

Been riding an er5 for 4 months it feels like its an electric bike it so smooth and torque, perfect for two up, I am now thinking of keeping it after the trip.

Got a versys as well as a second choice but that feels like a toy now(still a really good bike), so selling that keeping big honda.

Anyone clued up on the differences between the CBF1000 and the CBF1000F?

Honda's site says it has an extra bit of power, 5 kg less and a litre more fuel, but it's £1,300 more.

The new one is incrementally better - it's a little nippier in the corners, feels a little bit more planted. It's a little less boggy down at 3k as well, and apparently the fuel economy is better.

IIRC, it's the new fireblade lump in there as well, so it's a newer design engine by something like 5 years.

It's also more expensive! I took both the old and the new out and although the newer one is better, there are some good deals to be had on the older one - I got 0% finance on mine over three years, which is nice.

I do want to pick up a new set of cans, though. The stock ones are MASSIVE and whisper quiet!

Currently got one as a courtesy bike - it really is quiet. Sounds like a whine, almost electric.

It shifts though! No slouch. Just not as good around the twisties and a tad heaver than I'm used to. I'm starting to get to grips with it now though I think!

I was on a private road the other day, thought I was doing maybe 90 or something... looked down and... well it wasn't 90!

Good bike for touring I would imagine!

Had one for 3 years and did both France and Spain on it. Over the 3 years I put 30,000 miles on it.

The suspension was not brilliant, but I paid about £600 for a new rear shock and the fork springs changing - it was like having a new bike.

The only time it let me down was in France and that was due to the known issue with the alternators burning out. Carole Nash recovered it to my local dealer. It was a year out of warranty but Honda paid half for the new stator. Some people have even had them for free out of warranty but it seems to be luck of the draw.

I thought it was a really good bike, pulled like a train, didn't have masses of power but it was all where you needed it and therefore useful power. It was surprisingly agile for it's weight. Even low speed was nice and easy due to the low down weight.

Does the 2009 have the generator problem, or is it the revised model?

It was the mk1 that had the issue, not sure on the mk2 but since it's a different engine I doubt it.

There's plenty of info on the cbf1000 forum about it. When I went to France it was with the guys off the CBF1000 forum - there were about 12 of us. All of us had either experienced the issue or known someone who had. They seem to burn out in roughly the same position:

https://img189.imageshack.us/img189/8956/imag0023m.th.jpg

I was lucky in a way. The alternator gave up in France and was producing enough power to run the bike but not enough to charge the battery. This meant I could bump start it to get it going, which I did for 3 days. When I got back to England I was on the M11 in the outside lane when it finally failed completely, meaning a rather interesting manoeuvre from the outside lane to the services exit with no power. I was then recovered by Carole Nash back to Leeds where Castle Honda fixed the problem with a 50% contribution from Honda.

I wouldn't overly worry about it, just be aware of it. Some guys have done silly mileage and had no issues. It's the only weak spot on the bike that I'm aware of, excluding the wind noise that a lot of people get from the screen. There are tons of aftermarket screens though, so you should be able to find something that suits if it's an issue for you. Some people resolve it by putting washers between the screen and the fairing at the bottom to create a bigger gap. It all depends on your height and riding position - some people have no issue whatsoever. It also depends on which position you put the screen, bars and seat in (there's 2 screen, 2 bar and 3 seat positions to choose from, which is something I really liked about the bike).

I replaced mine with Blueflame cans. They were the black satin ones and looked really good on the black bike. They made the engine sound so much better, but were also considerably lighter than the stock cans (about 50% lighter, if not more).
