Hello all, well another lesson completed in a car park at the weekend (CBT booked for this Saturday) and I absolutely loved it. Been bitten by the bug bigtime. I'm nearly 40, had a car licence for 21 years. So my hopefully not stupid question is this:

Do the Mod1 and Mod2 have to be on the same size bike? My aim is to pass (obviously!) and be able to ride any bike unrestricted. I am buying a 125cc after I've got the CBT at the weekend and backing up my own experience with weekly lessons from a local school on a large bike. SO can I take my Mod1 on a 125 (my own) and Mod2 on the schools bike (500cc+), pass both and be have an unrestricted licence?

The tests must be completed on a bike suitable for the licence category. So you cannot take your mod1 on a 125 and then your mod2 on a 500cc.

Well, you can, but you would end up with a restricted license....

They should be on the same category of bike, but I can't for the life of me recall if my Mod 1 pass has the category recorded on it. I'll see if I can dig it out later.

Should have - both my Mod 1 and Mod 2 certificates have a "category" section filled in as "A2".

The only stupid question is the one you should have asked but didn't.

I feel the same way, my poor bandit being restricted. Sad

I went to a garage and they said I should by no means take the restrictor kits out, file them down and replace them. Laughing

Good to know, very similar position to OP here. And now i'll probably run with the restriction for 2 years. Sorry to hijack but will the new directive make this a bad idea or since the test will be passed is one exempt from the new legislation.

Completely unrelated question, what's the best way of removing ink from a Mod 1 pass certificate. I hear lighter fluid can do it... Wink

You're almost certainly fine. The Directive itself says that it shouldn't result in anyone losing entitlement, and I can't imagine any scenario in which the DfT would or could convert an "A <= 25kW" to anything else - there's no equivalent in the new categories. Actually, the new equivalent (based on test bike) would be A1, the joke category, and I don't see Mike 'the bike' Penning doing that to us.

We can't be 100% sure since the DfT still haven't published the final implementation (>14 months late now Mad ), but I don't think there's any realistic grounds for concern.
