Had my first time ever on a bike today as the beginning of my Direct Access Course.
I rode round the yard on a 600 Fazer and just didnt get to grips with it at all, stalling, hurtling petrified towards fences, wobbling all over - you know the sort.

He pulled me in for a coffee after a torrent of vile language and threats to disassemble the piece of **** I was riding!!

I told him that having bought an SV650 and paying him the £700 for the course, clothing ect that I feel I have wasted our honeymoon money and my wife will not be best pleased. His reply was " you will be ok when we get out on the road", road? You must be joking pal............

Anyway, 20 mins later and sporting a sweaty brow off we set.

Well, 300 yards later it all clicked... Up through the gears, back down again, junctions, towns, Dual Carriageways!!!!!!!

Absolutely brilliant and cant wait for my next lesson!!!!! Very Happy

Within 20 minutes of picking up my first big (and current) bike I was on the M6 doing over 90 mph. Considering how many times I stalled it to start with ... and that I dropped it on my drive ... was a good day Very Happy Thumbs Up . Welcome to the 2 wheel club. Hope you get your lifetime membership soon!

Haha, well done!!!

It can be tough, it just doesn't come easy to all.
I remember the first time I got on a 600 and I was like "you gotta be fekin kidding me" but I have to be honest, although I was a bit nervy I was ALL smiles Laughing

It was a world apart from my 125cc in power AND my bike isn't exactly a powerhouse either, but OMG it's just fun!!

You wait, you will wonder why you were so worried.

Enjoy these times BUT know this, it get's even better!! Thumbs Up

Great to hear that you had a good day.
I'm not going to mention who I did my DAS with, but he saw I had a problem with my bottle.I.E I would slow down too much at bends/corners.He took me out on a dual carriagewayon the outward journey there was a lovely left bend he said to me,follow me i'll take the bend at 70 and if you slow down I'll bollock into you.I was nervous as hell but didn't slow down.On the way back he said i'm going to follow you round the bend, same bend but just right handed this time.He said take it at what ever speed you now feel safe at.I took the bend at 90 mph without even ealising I was doing it.
I think the morol of this little story is trust your instructor,he wont let you do anything if he doesn't think you're up to it.

Hang on - first time ever except for your CBT, right? Cos you aint taking no Mod 1 or 2 tests without your CBT certificate to show the examiner.

So you did your CBT on a 600cc bike?

I was led to believe you had to do your CBT on a 125 and pass your Theory Test (not necessarily in that order) before being allowed to do a DAS course on a bigger bike!

I would have been a lot happier doing my CBT on a 500 or 600 cc bike because they are much safer and way easier to ride - but I was told it was not an option!

I got cheated - I am not pleased.

I dunno if you HAVE to do your cbt on a 125 or smaller.... I know I was put out on a 400 for the road riding element of the cbt so there must be an allowance to use the bigger bike.....sure someone cleverer than I and with a list of the rules and regs will be along shortly to tell us if we are wrong though....Razz

i got a cbt cert so that was good enough for me......Very Happy

cheers

I just had a trawl through the DSA site, and although it says:

Completing CBT means you can ride
a learner motorcycle up to 125 cc
displaying L plates

It also states the engine sizes and bhp ratings required for the full test - but it doesn't say that you can't do the actual CBT on a bigger bike!

I don't understand how you can legally ride a 400 or 600 cc bike on the road before you get your CBT certificate (assuming that you don't get your cert until you have completed the on-road section), but you are restricted to 125cc once you have one!

your only limited to the 125 after your cbt if your not with an instructor though. as long as you have an instructor and are in radio contact (as far as i can decipher the rules) you can ride any bike for the purposes of training as long as you comply with all the other learner rule re L plates etc....

I guess that if the requirement set out specifying the cbt standards do not exclude bikes over 125 its simply down to what the instructors feel is best for you to learn on.

cheers

Sounds reasonable to me - pity about the 'Radio Contact' though - wouldn't having an instructor as a FaceBook friend do Laughing

Maybe you can take your CBT on a 600, technically. But would any training school really risk a bike more expensive and powerful than a 125 be used by someone who has never ridden a motorcycle before? I can't see it myself, that you could effectively train in a Bugatti veyron in order to be certified and limited to a Fiat panda.
I smell shenanigins.
Come on foggysdad - put us out of our misery. Was it really your first time ever on a bike and that it was on a 600 Fazer?
