A few days ago, the idea of learning to ride popped into my head. Since then I've been looking into it more and more, that led me here.

I've swatted up on CBT and licenses, the gear you need, tax etc.

The one thing I haven't yet looked at is the bike itself. I'm 18, so I can have a 125cc after passing my CBT (right?). I've only come across one bike so far and that's the Suzuki GN 125, seems a bit out of my price range though at £900.

Yeps you can have a 125cc at age 17 after you've done a CBT. What is your price range ? Only 900 quid is not exactly much money for a second hand bike.

At 18, do your CBT and buy whatever bike you can. Really, so long as the bike works, get it. You want to get your tests passed before January 2013, ideally.

You can worry about what bike you can get after you pass, but that should really be your priority Thumbs Up

I don't really have a price range as such, but let's say if after expenditure I have £50 left over each week. (Will most likely change, what with bus fare rising soon), if I were to save for a £900 bike it'd take four and a half months. I'd also have to buy the over gear, the insurance and do the CBT. It'd be a long time to save up, even when putting 100% of my cash left after rent, bills etc.

To be honest, I'd save the money until I saw a bargain bike that I could buy right that instance, if that makes any sense. Always bound to be a few nice bikes in the local ads etc?

It's just knowing what to look for, I guess.

@J.M , the plan was to save up and do the CBT first. Before that though, I was planning to have a free ride with geton.co.uk , there's a place quite close to me for it.

I'd think they'd cause more harm than good, although I did hear something about Sanye (sp?) being a nice brand?

to be honest mate ive never heard of sanye Confused but any way just keep looking around dont just rush in to it its quite a big decision so dont just buy the first bike you see, and also if you come across a too good to be true price it probably is a scam or the bike will most likely be fooooked so it would be a good idea to take some one along with you who nos abit about bikes to check it over for you, But like i say just look about because there are a few bargains out there to be had Smile

wtf??? Gods no. The man already has no money.

I've seen a couple of 125s for the £500 or less mark in rideaway condition ie: full ticket etc.

What you get your hands on is unlikely to be pretty, but you cant afford pretty. My first CG cost me £450 with a full years ticket, my second which admitedly had no ticket was £375.

However they are unlikely to be close to you. So be prepared to do some travelling.

Budget £40 for a new lid (dont buy a secondhand one), £20 for gloves and £40 to £50 for a jacket. All very doable. Say £90 for your CBT, tax of £15 and insurance at roughly the £150 mark.

If you can raise £900 practically, then your budget for the bike itself will be around £550.

OK, go and do your CBT.

Then it's worthwhile talking about bikes.

Agreed. I had the bike idea before anything else but after talking to some decent guys in a dealership, I've re-focused on doing the training first. Wink
