I'm guessing it depends on the actual insurer

Kind of answered your own question there.

also depends on whether you have declared it as garaged or not too.

My insurance only covers me for theft from my address or close proximity to, if my bike is locked away in the garage, if it was stolen from the drive after i washed it they wouldn't pay out.

Depends completely on insurer mate. my old policy covered it from everywhere bar my work place but my new policy covers me only if it gets stolen out of my alarmed garage and the ground anchor was on. Bit strict tbh Smile

I'm with carole nash, and I think my policy covers me at my house if it's in the garage, or if it isn't and it does get stolen then I have to pay more excess to get the claim going.

If it's within (I think 300 yards) and it gets stolen then it won't be covered (unless for those reasons above).

If you have theft cover; it should cover a theft from anywhere; outside your house; from company car-park; NCP car-park or the street outside the shops.

The exclusions or 'get-out' clauses depend on what security you declare and whether or not you declare it 'kept' other than at registered address.

Personally, I tend to avoid declaring any security; I declare overnight parking 'off-street', but no garage; no alarm; no disc-lock; no chain or anchor; no security markings.

Going through a lot of different sites for quotes trying different security options, it seldom makes a HUGE difference, even on a high price policy, unless you start declaring high end thatcham approved stuff or trackers.

So, if I dont declare using an HD lock & Chain, they cant moan, if the bike got nicked, and I had used one. Where as if I declared a high end lock & chain, as I intended using it at home when locking teh bike for the night, but not carting it around with me; they MIGHT insist that declaring it's use implied using it ALL the time, no matter where parked.

T&C's and individual insurers policies vary; but that's my 'default' way of looking at it.

Theft cover isn't limited to a home address unless done so by endorsement to the policy.

You're likely getting confused with the garaging condition that many insurers will place on the policy if you've been given a discount for / been subject to acceptance criteria of keeping the bike in a locked garage. This condition will usually state that theft cover is excluded anywhere within the vicinity (distance will vary) of the home address whilst not garaged between the hours of x and y, ie overnight.
