Hi guys.

Getting my CBR back on the road after i had a mishap with it in the garden. it's still misfiring but that's a carb issue i'm sure.

I'm now faced with a few problems.

I've taken the tensioner out and primed it, stuck it back in and the noise goes away till i restart it...

here's the vid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_tGcLwp_Ho

Now. When it's running, i get a lot of white/blue smoke from the exhaust when it's revved, maybe just because it's been sitting for a while?

From the exhaust, i also get a lot of black water, which has no smell to it, dripping from it. it revs cleanly but just doesn't seem right. i'm hoping this is just condensation from the 6-7 months it's been sitting.

Can anyone shed some light on this one?

Is it worth spending the £60 on a manual cam chain tensioner to sort this?

Going to be cleaning out the carbs anyway this week, but if this doesn't solve it.... i'm now worrying about timing.

Cheers

Dunc

Did you by any chance just take out the tensioner, clean it and put it back in without taking the cam cover off and checking the timing was still in place?

Pointless question as I know you didn't check. The cam chain came off the bottom of the crank and slipped a few teeth. Well done, theres a good chance that standing there revving an obviously sick motorcycle has caused some expensive damage. If you are VERY lucky it is only one tooth out and although the valves are touching the pistons they are only slightly bent and will still work fine.

That noise is the valves hitting the pistons NOT the cam chain.

Cheers for the reply, but I'm not sure that's right. The bike only makes this noise when its started without the choke when warm. Its been like this for a while. If I put it in gear and move off, about 7k rpm, the noise stops and it sounds fine when idling. No irregular tapping at all. It sounds like the 7k mile engine it is...

The smoke from the exhaust only started when the bike fell on its side on the grass and the floats somehow stuck and petrol was pissong from it. I've cleaned them before parking it up but its not had the plugs changed or anything yet as I've been pretty skint. Will be sorting it this weekend

I left the bike to cool down and started if with the choke after the video, and it was fine. As I said, only makes this sound after it warms up and is stopped and started again.

That's why I'm pretty sure its the tensioner. This one runs off oil pressure rather than a ratchet and its a common issue, just wanted confirmation from someone who's had the same thing.

Cheers

i'm gonna get another video once i get a new battery since this one's not holding charge, and i'll show that it sounds fine when it's started cold.

I'll see what the opinion is then Thumbs Up

Warm the engine until it rattles.

Take the M6 plug out of the back of the tensioner using an 8mm spanner. Now find a long thin flat-bladed screwdriver that you can comfortably fit inside the tensioner so that it engages in the slot.

Hold the screwdriver from turning and start the engine. You'll feel a tugging on the tensioner but hold it firmly to resist turning. If you get a rattle then GENTLY turn it to tighten the tension a small fraction of a turn (you will have checked which way to turn it before starting the engine I'm sure). Make sure you don't turn it to loosen the chain.

If your rattle stops the top end is fine and you need a new tensioner. Could be that the chain is worn and the tensioner spring has unwound until it no longer holds with enough spring-force.

As i've said, the tensioner is not the spring loaded tensioner type. it works off oil pressure.

The F3 had the bolt on the back, the one on my bike looks like this:

would a hornet one fit? Being pretty much the same engine and all that, might be a bit simpler

The CCT's are notoriously bad on the CBR-F, have you tried a Manual CCT?

I'm not too sure on the noise, it doesn't sound anything like mine did when it had a duff tensioner though.

If my model CBR (2001 CBR600f) ends up on it's left side it fills the airbox with oil through the crankcase breather pipe. That then drips into the throttle bodies and smokes unless you whip the airbox off and give it a wipe out... could be that something similar happens on your model 600f?

It could be that. Ill take the carbs off and give everything a good clean, check the timing just to be sure and prop the tensioner... Again... After making sure the oil level is right.

The video does make it sound a lot worse than it is. As I've said, ill stick another video up when I've got the new battery.

Till thursday I can't really do anything, so its on hold till then.

Right. so i've started it cold with plenty choke and here are the results.

It can't be the pison smacking the valves as it's not making the sound anymore, so is this the tensioner problem then?

I'm more worried about the smoke, water and misfire. hoping it's just a carb problem...

AS you can... hear/see... it sounds like a twin...

Start from scratch here dunc.

Take off the carbs, take out all the jets and clean them thoroughly. I had a problem with mine that we couldn't get the float bowls to re-seal as the gaskets were fucked, so check that too.

As I said before, get a spare plug and check you've got a good spark on all the cylinders. Then replace all plugs.

Put it all back together, with FRESH fuel.

My bet is that the smoke is due to water in the fuel on idle and when revved the excess fuel thats getting into the cylinders because the carbs aren't working properly is washing the bores and that oil is being burnt.

Also, check the oil level as that could explain the smoke.

SHE LIVES!

Cleaning out the carbs, and found that cylinder 4's idle jet wasn't in properly.... fell out as soon as i took the float bowl off.

Oops, those pesky little garden gnomes, playing with my bike.

So anyway, it's sorted now, but it does have a weak spark. put some standard plugs in and it refused to fire up. played about with it for a while without much luck.

So i put in some iridium plugs, and it fired straight up. Need to have a look at this, maybe a bad earth.

Anyway, it's all sorted and it runs well, sounds good, no worrying noises, and best of all, NO SMOKE!

I've missed it.

Need to wait another month now so that i can afford to put it through it's MOT and tax it now Laughing

Good stuff, what was the noise then?

The loose jet rattling around or funny things happening because of the bad fuelling?

My CBR drips water from the exhaust collector box when first started, if it hasn't been run for a couple of days. Probably condensation - definitely not coolant.

The noise is the camchain rattling. manual tensioner is in the post so should get that soon, which should sort that problem.

I think it was made worse due to the bad fueling, and so misfiring. it sounds quite sweet now.

The water dripping from the zorst is still a mystery, but it's not happening anymore so my guess is unburnt fuel maybe? not sure why it didn't smell like petrol, but who knows.

Cheers

Water dripping from the exhaust is just steam condensating on the cold internals. Get the engine and exhaust hot and it will stop.
