Is there any way to stop this? Every time i oil my chain, i leave the bike standing overnight, use it the next day or a couple days later and when i get back home, oil splash marks are all over the chrome wheel and on the tyre wall.
So i thought maybe i apply to much. Cleaned the chain thoroughly, applied a very minimal amount of 10/40w engine oil with a paint brush, took it out the next day and yet again my back wheel has oil on it.

DO all bikes do this?

Mine always has, never bothers me, just rub it off after a ride.

Are you applying the lube to the inside of the chain?

You overdid it. As I found out you do not need as large amount, light brush frequently to keep it wet.

I used a wax based on my first attempt and was a bit heavy handed. That takes some cleaning.

The other option is fit a scot oiler or something similar.

I use engine oil, i run it along the top and bottom and on the sprockets, i figure it will lube itself when in motion as well

how often do you guys lube it?

I read one comment what said every 200 miles, which works out about every week for me.

I found this problem recently and thought it might have contributed to my off.

Dependant on your oil, more frequent with engine oil as opposed to wax for example.

Just inspect it before every ride, you will start to know how long to leave it.

In that case you might consider a Scottoiler or something to do it for you? If you ride a lot, you're saving yourself a lot of time in chain maintenance.

Edited for grammar.

Try some chainsaw chain oil, it flicks off alot less. I got some off ebay think it was about £5 for a litre which will last for years.

Mine always has, but i've always used this cheap chain lube from Morrisons for about £2. When I tried chain wax I found the chain rusted quickly, so I went back to the lube.

I simply use a bit of parrafin on a rag to remove it.

As above, only I use a squirt of WD40 on a rag to remove it.

I'm glad you asked the question though - as I was wondering the same thing!!

At least it's easy enough to remove.

Yep

basically there's very little you can do about it although tbh it only takes 2 minutes to remove with a bit of wd40. Also, use a rag lightly to blot excess oil of the chain when you've lubed it.

Scottoilers are great cause you can set the rate so it lubes just enough but not so much that it flings off all the time.

I've just picked up an old vt500ef and its my first shaft drive. Lovely.

You only need to apply it to the inside of the chain run as centrifugal force will cause the lube to spread to the outer links.

You'll also get less fling-off if you use something with a higher viscosity over engine oil such as 80-90w gear oil.

Every time I see posts like this, reminds me of that guys pic who lubes his chain on centre stand while in gear.

I'd say you're using too much oil. I only put a very very light layer of oil on the chain. Got an old cloth that I pour a little scottoil on and the run the chain through it, adding a little oil every now and again until the entire chain has a nice light oily layer.

Keep the ScottOiler set quite low to stop it flinging. It doesn't have to be set very high to keep the chain nice!

Don't think my method would work without the oiler though, as you'd likely have to be doing it every few days to keep it clean and oily.

+1,

I use to just laquer lube on at random intervals like a dork back in the day, used to fling all up the back within minutes.

Now I clean with chain cleaner thoroughly before applying a light even smattering of lube in the manner that Paddy and Stinger have stated, every 500ish miles, never had a problem since.

From having a road bike for a while, the outside of the chain is almost irrelevant, I'd be surprised if the same doesn't apply to bikes.

All you need is enough oil for the inner links to be lubricated. It's not about preventing rust, it's about making the chain run smoother and wear less quickly.

Oil on the outside of the chain is just going to attract crap.
