A small 'clunk' is normal - this is caused by the viscous coupling effect of the oil in the gearbox, also known as 'oil drag' which has a tendency to cause parts of the gear-train to rotate, even though they are not being directly driven by the engine.
This wouldn't happen if there was no oil in the gearbox, so maybe it's a good sign
If you hold the clutch in for longer and make sure the engine rpm is as low as possible before selecting 1st gear, the 'clunk' should be less noticeable. It should also be less clunky when the engine is hot.
When coming to a temporary stop, try to select 1st gear while the bike is still rolling forwards. Also, find a downhill section of road and try selecting 1st gear while rolling forwards - again, this should make it less noticeable. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Cheers guys, looks like it's just the thickness of the oil/engine temp
Rode it out today, after a break for some food, the still hot engine went into 1st without (any noticeable) jerking.
Still got a lot to learn ____________________ Just getting started |
