I was wondering what speed cameras they use in Scotland? It was one with lines along the road at set gaps, looked like a GATSO, but grey at the front with red stripes on dayglow on the other side.

Do they only have to paint them in England? Thought it was mandatory, but these are grey on one side only.

If it wasn't painted in high viz colours it wouldn't have been a speed camera, lines on the road would probably be from an old one, they get moved all the time.

It's a police state up there with regards to cameras, I have never seen anything like it.

You can go from Darlington to Jedburgh for what must be 100 miles and not see one, as soon and I mean as soon as you cross the border and you get to the bottom of the hill there's one.

Saying that i've been to that London with my TomTom with traffic camera warnings and it is constantly beeping.

Are these GATSOs? I was going towards one (grey side facing towards me) and it flashed at me... bit confused!

(A friend of mine has been through a GATSO facing him at twice the speed limit and he says it's never flashed).

A GATSO only serves the side of the road it is on. They take a photo of the back of your car/bike.

I believe they can be triggered by vehicles on the opposite side of the road however it doesn't 'count'.

I will just leave this here...

That's a bit unfair. The road you're talking about is particularly bad. There are no more cameras than anywhere else i've been.

wow kawa, you missed out if that road is your lasting impression, we have very few cameras up here for the amount of road we have. East coast is camera happy compared to the west, but get off the commuter roads and try the B roads.

OP, if the camera is facing you with its grey side then it is for traffic going the other way, and yes you can set them off from the other side, remember to wave if you do Wink

This is a gatso. This particular one is on the A90.

The ones on the A1 once you're into the Lothians go off at traffic in both directions, they can only do you on the ones at your side of the road because you need to be on the road markings for them to calculate your speed. If you take the piss by repeatedly triggering oncoming ones they will eventually track you down though.

Next time take the A7. Ignore the signs trying to make you turn off onto the A68, it goes all the way to Edinburgh. The A7 has no Gatsos, the A68 and A1 do.

As far as I knew, it was merely that if they wanted to keep the fines from them, they had to be pained in high vis - if the fines go straight to the government, they don't have to be.

That camera is absolutely begging for a tyre full of petrol and a match.

To be honest I rarely see speed camera's here - Although I did notice the other day - There is no camera's between my home in Falkirk and where I live in Dundee (60 odd miles) but as soon as you go slightly north of Dundee, there is two within a mile of each other.

I guess its down to each forces discretion where/how many camera's they have within their jurisdiction.

Disagree with that went up to Jedburgh last year and the only camera I encountered was the one you mentioned just after the border and those rather nice bends down the hill (went past it 6 times in total, missed the border stop first time so turned around to go have a neb before progressing).

Honestly I've found that the area from N.Yorkshire, Co. Durham, Northumberland (avoiding Newcastle ofc) through to Roxburghshire to have the least Gatso presence of anywhere I've been in the UK.

Unless it's blue. Pretty sure these can hit both sides. Thumbs Down

You were lucky because you rode past quite a few that you obviously missed.

I believe you can set off GATSOs on the opposite side of the road (coming towards the camera), I done 50 through a 30mph one and it flashed... no front numberplate though. Laughing Didn't even realise there was a speed camera there - its a very desolate road... if you dont know that road, you'l think its a 40, atleast.

N Yorks prides itself on NO speed cams Thumbs Up Strange, but they do put speed cam signs up though Twisted Evil But it does have a much higher level of decent road policing....

So instead of knowing where NOT TO SPEED, you have to be far more carefull......

Must have done, baring in mind on a 125 wasn't exactly at much risk of breaking limits barring the odd 30/40 zones in villages, I'm going up there again in the coming weeks on the CBR so may have a look out.
