So the sump might be coming off at some point so I can (try to) change the selector forks, selector drum and a few other accesible gearbox parts to see if I can sort my 3rd gear problem without having to drop and split the end + change gears.

I can't find any mention of a gasket for the sump? Haynes doesn't mention it, and the honda service manual PDF I have isn't crystal clear either.

Does it sound reasonable that it might just be a smear of sealant instead of a gasket? It doesn't seem to want a gasket for the clutch cover either (I know the generator cover has one).

Oh, and what sealant should I be using and how much? A nice bead all round, or just a smeared coating with a gloved finger?

Why does it only require that small marked area being covered in sealant on the crankcases, but the cover being coated all round?

Loctite "Flange sealant" would be what you are after.

As to why they want the extra blobs? no idea.

Mmm, flange...

Nice post! It makes it come up in the ebay ad at the bottom of the thread Thumbs Up Very Happy Would any other black oil resistant sealant do, like Hondabond HT (which is just ThreeBond 1207b) or Loctite 5910?

To be honest my main worry was whether or not it should have a gasket. From what I've found it should be a totally flat smooth joint, so no gasket needed. Sound about right?

Righto, will order some before I have a bash at it. Thumbs Up Karma

Another related question; What sort of sealant would you use on the semi-circular cutouts of the valve cover seal? Same stuff, as it needs to be oil and heat resistant? Or will it mess up the rubber?

The stuff that's there at the moment looks clear/yellowish... But then it does leak!

it would normallt have a gasket, however some sealant will be fine, i normally spread mine with my finger.

as for the "blobs", that would be where the 2 crank case halfs join, the gasket wont stop leaking from the three joins, just 2, the sealant stop it seaping outta there

The factory manual specifies sealant. Not uncommon in modern machinery.

The original gasket is probably part of Gasket Kit B: 06112-MBW-600

About $30 anywhere in the world…

…except that you live in the UK so that’ll be about £50 please. Smile

When I replaced the sump pan on my older CBR600 a few years ago I was able to get the gasket on its own from a dealer and it wasn’t too expensive.

Also, are you sure the sump needs to come off to get to the gearbox? Sounds excessive somehow.

That isn't the excessive method! You can cheat and change the selector forks by removing them through the sump. The alternative is to drop the engine and split the cases. THAT is excessive! Factor in the cost of all the gaskets which is about £120+ and it makes it insane...
