So I needed a cheap way of commuting to work over the summer. Never owned a FJ before. Heard a lot of good things about them. This was bought on a whim.

Any BCF experts got any pointers what I should be looking out for with one of these ?

I was pre-warned it was a heavy bike. Personally speaking, It certainly didn't feel it. The weight is so close to the ground, its actually less aggro than "lighter" bikes I've ridden. And the brakes were a lot better than I expected. Wasn't it originally designed a sports bike in the 80's ??

It was never a sports bike, always been a sports tourer. Yamaha were selling FZRs alongside these.

Great bike for that price though, sadly I have nothing constructive to add besides my appreciation of it, even in that frankly odd colour scheme Mr. Green

£650? Bugger me, that's a good price. Looks to be in very good nick. How does it run/sound?

I did 50 odd faultless miles of motorway getting her home. 5th Gear seems to get used from about 20mph up to pretty much whatever speed your brave enough to run it till. It seems to have grunt irrelevant of what gear your in or how fast your going....

With the after-market pipes and k&n's it makes that deep sort of growl you get with american muscle cars...

Seems to fire straight off the button with a touch of choke. That suggests to me that the engines' in reasonable nick. I've never been a fan of this style or era of bike, but the fairing does a remarkable job of protecting the rider.

If it's the 3CV then use a bit of bathroom sealant on the rivets that hold the mesh panels into the fairing otherwise they buzz annoyingly.

Join the FJ owners club, well worth it just for cheap spares and if you want it, cheap servicing.

Don't use the drain bolt on the oil filter housing as they strip easily when re-tightened. Just remove the housing, it makes no more mess. When replacing it, be sure you don't trap any cables behind it.

The shims can be removed with a small flat bladed screwdriver in seconds, no need to buy the special tool.

Flip up screens are worth having.

Keep the brake calipers/pistons clean, they love to seize.

The reserve fuel switch sometimes break.

The oil light can come on when going up very steep hills. Do not panic!

If you need to change the headstock bearings there is no lip to put a drift on to the races to tap them out, you need one of those expanding collet blind bearing removers and a slide hammer.

There was a pretty ratty one with similar mileage up for £500 on gumtree the other day and I was very tempted. The ZZR does doesn't cope with 2 up touring very well so I was very tempted to replace it with one of these for the summer's exploration. However I am about to move house and have 3 bikes, all of which need work, so I can't justify it right now.

Give me a pm when you feel like selling up... Thumbs Up

They fit most late 1980s and early 90s Yamahas TBH.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
