Yep, farewell CG.

I was thinking to myself, how do I get to university from there on?

So I decided to pop into the shed, and managed to find my old push bike.

So I pump up the wheels, and give it a quick check over to see if its good to go. and it is!

So, this morning there I am, making my commute. I get to the first main road and...RTA RTA RTA.

I was going down the road when a stationary/parked vehicle decided to open his door on me. Bang, flat I land on the ground with a bus about 25 metres behind me.

The driver gets out, and a member of public help get me to the side along with my push bike.

The driver then nips to the shop, comes back..gets in his car, and off he goes.

So I'm sitting there with my knee injury thinking..WTFWTFWTF.

I called the ambulance, after 5 hours and a x-ray, seems nothing is broken (Y)

Where do I go from here? I've reported him to the police, and I have his VRM. What can I do?

(I had no helmet/hi viz on)

Bummer on the accident, and kudos on the usual standard of paint diagram... but why is the subject a question ?

Did they not teach you to give cars a 3 ft gap when passing when you did your cycle proficiency test? Laughing
As he left the scene of a rta he'll get fucked over if you called the pigs.

You probably know this or its obvious anyway but car insurance usually includes the phrase "We cover you and any passengers whilst they are entering or exiting your vehicle" so chances are if he has no cash you'll still have a claim with his insurer.

If he's uninsured / untraceable there's always the MIB scheme.

https://www.roadsafetyuk.co.uk/cyclists.htm might be of interest (no personal experience of them)

Good luck

Take it up with the police. Its practically the same as if it happened to you on a motorbike. The idiot should have stayed and seen that your OK and exchanged details.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I think I will take it further.

I wouldn't have minded if he gave me a lift home and payed for damages to my bike, but having the nerve to drive off while I'm sitting on the floor helpless, well thats taking 'care' to a whole new level.

There was a witness, but I didn't take any detail's down. I didn't know where I stand as a cyclist.

Anyway, a picture of the cager as he fled the scene....

Just about got my confidence as a motorcyclist back, from the accident in June..and now this ¬.¬

Nice one on getting a picture of it.

Always make sure I have my phone on me charged at all times whenever on the bike.

50/50.

You don't open a car door without looking what's behind you.

But as you said, always leave a big enough gap.

Exactly the same as any other situation where some twunt has mashed you up.

Without witness details, you're on a sticky wicket. Grass him up for the lulz though.

Right. So if you opened a car door without checking it was safe (and committed the offence of opening a door into danger) you'd blame the cyclist/car/other vehicle? Good luck with that.

It's smart to leave room when possible, because this is going to happen to you sooner or later. But "fault"? That's a big word. If I randomly step right in front of a car, is their "fault" for not anticipating my idiocy?

If you cycle out of the door zone, then in practice, you'll have a taxi or white van hanging off your rear mudguard, with some scarlet faced Neanderthal yelling abuse at you to get in the fvcking gutter where you fvcking belong, you tax dodging fvcker.

No doubt you have some pearls of wisdom for how to deal with that. Throat punches every hundred yards? Perhaps some of those oh-so-scathing YouTube whinge videos?

I had some one open their rear car door on me when I was on my Hornet a few years ago.
It was a narrow street so the 3' gap couldn't be observed.
The insurance paid out to me no problems.
Hope this will be the case with you.
Good luck.
