Hi all, so I'm new to biking, and never been one to watch a lot of sport, but i've decided this year to give MOTO GP a go... all set to watch the qatar race... but can any followers/supporters give me a quick overview of who to look out for, what are the rules, how does the competition work etc?

sorry if it sounds daft, but i've never followed football because i'm crap at it, but due to really enjoying riding I think I'll be able to appreciate the skill involved etc.

Thanks all! Very Happy

The 2012 season reviewed for your benefit.

Stacey Moaner will win. Jorge Lorenzo will cry about not being able to catch Moaner and Ben Spies will be told he has to finish behind Lorenzo as Lorenzo is an ex world champion.

Rossi will struggle to keep his Ducati on the track for most of the races and will not finish most of the races, the ones he does finish he will be lucky to get a top 5 place.

All in all, a repeat of last year. Laughing

British Superbikes. Generally closer racing and more accessible machinery than the MotoGP stuff. Think of it as British Touring Cars to MotoGP's Formula 1.

There has been a big split between Superbikes and GP racing.
Superbikes:
Kawasaki
Ducati (sort of)
Honda (sort of)
Suzuki
BMW
Aprillia

GP:
Honda
Yamaha
Ducati
Aprillia (not really, but enough for the others to complain)

Don't watch MotoGP, it's crap. It might be better next season but currently it's crap. Simply there aren't enough teams & bikes so none of the young talent can make it up to MotoGP.

Moto2 on the other hand (the class below) has a wealth of young talent, aggressive riding and very similar bikes. I HIGHLY recommend you watch it!

This years favourite is Stoner. The honda is the best bike especially in a straight line due to some fancy gearbox. Pedrosa is good but falls off and gets injured too much. Yamaha is the second best bike. Lorenzo is the best yamaha rider, Spies is tipped to do better on the new 1000cc bikes. Top brit is Crutchlow, he struggled to adapt to MotoGP last season, but he's looked promising during testing. His team mate Dovi is very good, though one of those seats is promising to rising british star Smith for next season, so it will be a fight between them as to who gets kept.

The most popular man in MotoGP is Rossi. He's wacky, does crazy things when he wins a race etc and seems to be quite a nice guy. In the past he won with Honda, then he fell out with them over money and bike development (basically they claimed the wins were cause of their great bike, he claimed they were cause of his riding ability). He moved to Yamaha and continued winning. After developing the yamaha they stuck some new young talent on it (Lorenzo) and when Rossi got injured and Lorenzo won the championship they offered Lorenzo a huge pay rise and Rossi a big pay cut. So he moved on to Ducati. Ducati had won the championship a few years earlier with Stoner but no one else seemed to be able to ride the bike. Last season was a bad one for Rossi who struggled with the Ducati. This season they have made some big changes and everyone is waiting to see how they work.

Added to the MotoGP class are a subclass of bikes called CRT. These have slightly different rules and are an effort to increase grid sizes. Being new teams with a tight budget they were always going to be slower, but by how much?

So those are the 2 big things everyone is waiting to find out.
