This may sound like a stupid topic but I thought it was worth asking. When you pop alone to the Petrol station do you....

Get off the bike and fill it up, or sit on it.

I tend to do a bit of both, annoying my SV only has a side stand and I don't like holding up with one hand when filling, so it's easier to sit on the bike, however, I've been shouted at from the tills for sitting on the bike in full gear when filling up, some places won't even turn the pump on.

So how do you do it?

*award for most boring thread ever*

Get off. You have to go and pay anyway, unless you use pay at the pump. After a couple of careless splashbacks from the filler over the years I'm glad I wasn't sat on the bike as I would have been stinking of petrol all day then.

Awkwardly - every time, dropping helmets, finding out petrol overflow goes onto zorst, over filling - general look like a tit. Thumbs Up

I like to sit, side stand makes it lean too far so I can't fill it right up.

I've never been asked to remove my helmet, although I was once asked to pay first. The extra time spent arguing over the fact I wanted to fill the thing up and not just go for £10 worth of fuel may have got me home before the tree fell and damaged my hyo! I should sue Esso.

I use one of two tesco stations every time. They are both pay at pump, and I have NEVER been told to take off my gear, let alone get off the bike. I actively avoid using other places because I've been told to get off my bike etc because they need to verify my age. Why a petrol station needs to do that I don't know.

Whatever's best man - sit if you wanna rest your legs, stand if they gotta stretch, etc. No right or wrong way to feed the beast.
Maybe compromise - side stand until as full as possible, then hold/stand if you wanna brim it.

Tesco always ask me to take my gear off when I walk in. In fact, they get quite pissy about it. This applies to a warm day too - no crazy amount of layers, taking my gloves off on my way in, wearing an OPEN FACE HELMET, but they still got bat shit and insist I strip before giving them some paper.

I filled up the RD250 ready for a Sunday ride. Brimmed it, glanced at the pump, £11.60. Not bad, i thought. Offered my tenner and a couple of pound coins, the nice man behind the bullet proof glass looked at me a bit oddly...... No sir, thats £17.60!!!! Jeez, I wish I had left it on the sidestand!
Forty miles on of generall hooliganism, (you've got no option on one of these things) and half the bloody tank was gone! Be glad when its ready for sale and I can get back on my civilised, comfortable and frugal ZZR.

I always stand with the bike between my legs, never had a problem.

Plus when you have your bike straight up, you can get more in it, compared to when it's tilted.

I always keep my helmet on as well. Watch "Long Way Down" when Ewan gets petrol in his eyes.

I always tend to use pay at the pump also.

Tesco's in Dumfries don't seem to be bothered if you leave your helmet on if your paying at the pump's but my bloody reward card isn't accepted on them machines for some reason (one of them small keyring ones), So I gotta take my helmet off any ways to walk into the shop Brick Wall

I got a centre stand and the bike is only 140 KG's dry so even on the side stand it's not heavy to hold up... but I suppose you could carry something to prop under the side stand to rise it up a bit more so you can stand to fill it

Correct answer: We could lose our petrol licence by letting someone underage fill up.

Real world answer: 99% of petrol stations are staffed by middle aged nazi women who want a bit of power.

Depends where the fuel cap is.

My last two bikes have had fuel caps on the top right hand side. You get more in if you fill it on the sidestand.

My keyring card doesn't work either, I have to use the full sized card, which is a bit of a ball ache.

Gathered it might be, however with the way the shops are now with drive offs etc it's interesting to see if petrol stations are getting more aggressive towards people taking their lids off.

Pay at pump with my card, stay sat on bike, keeping my lid on. Done it hundreds of times now (twice a week or so for the last 4 years) and never spontaneously combusted. Thumbs Up

Reason being I'm commuting and doing this on my way to work so time is of the essence, so to speak.

This.

Reason: I ride a thirsty bike with a piss poor sized petrol tank and if I can squeeze an extra few ml into my bike its an extra few yards before refill.

I usually stay sat on the bike, usually off the side stand.

And I rarely take my helmet off, even at the till ... although I do have a tendency to unzip my jacket as I am searching for my moneys, so I presume the attendants can see I am a bird and old enough to be someone's nan (most gas stations where I live are manned by young-ish Asian chaps)

I almost never pay at the pump, don't know why ... quite often I want to go for a wee, so I have to go in the shop anyway Laughing I hate gas stations that are more like supermarkets than gas stations these days, but do not have the decency to have a loo.

I sit there for ten minute trying to get the petrol cap off, then spend 10 minutes trying to fill the thing up (why the hell are the pumps so weird? you have to hold it like, gently for it to squirt out else it just clicks and nothing comes out?!)
Further 10 minutes trying to get the goddamn petrol cap back on
5 minutes going in with helmet on to pay

And for a apparent 12 litre tank, I can see the fuel in the brim top after £10 worth

Why's it gotta be so awkward bro?
Glad i don't have to do it often!

And i use the center stand, rather than it be at an angle...

Get off to put it on the centre stand, because I'm the kind of spacker who would drop it or shove the nozzle down my trousers if I didn't.

I've not yet been asked to remove my helmet at a pay-at-the-pump, but always do so when paying at the till, lest any kittens be panicked.

The age verification argument is of course utterly risible, it's just some pointless power tripping by a worthless harpy or miserable pedant somewhere in the chain of command - they don't demand that cultists remove their comedy face coverings, do they?

No, that's not on - see the aforementioned exception for cultists. If they deny you access to the premises, feel free to shout "Fine, get my details from the DVLA and bill me later" then ride off. Thumbs Up

I sit on it. Having filled up numerous vehicles over the years I've yet to have one catch fire...

As for the helmet thing I like to use pay at pump, just because it's less hassle of taking all my gear off and leaving my bike somewhere some idiot can drive into it. At least if I'm stood next to it they can't pretend it didn't happen!

Also it cuts out the hassle of having to deliberately slow down and take my time putting helmet, gloves etc on when some numpty decides they need to hurry me up by honking their horn and glaring. Where do they honestly expect me to ride to?
