It's that time of the year to give my bike its yearly clean up and I thought I'd share it with you lot, to help me keep track of what needs doing and to make sure I to finish it. There will be plenty of dodgy wobbly photos so let's get started.

Meet the bike, a 1990 CBR400RR K NC23. Was in pretty good shape when I got it, everything there and working. Few scratches and cracks in the fairing, dents in exhaust, bent radiator, things like that but otherwise good shape for its age.

It's had it's abuse for the year, time to get it ready for this years fun. Twisted Evil

Here it is right before the project started. The fairings are still in one piece, just never bothered putting them back on because they're a pain in the ass when you want under them.

Nice and dirty, just how I like it. Wink

And the project begins!

Update soon.

Gave it a wash, once with paraffin, then wd40, then degreaser then soapy water. Not very through because it was dark and cold, only to get the worst of it off.

Engine casings off. Filed all the lines down a little bit to make it even before painting.

Filthy yoke
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159518-800.jpg

Clipon. Bar ends have to go and need new grips. Throttle assembly has been damaged and cut back to make it work properly.

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159521-full.jpg

Engine casing painted. You can see my custom fitted peg, scooter pillion peg welded solid. Have only had it on since about november, broke the original in march and never replaced it until then, only for the MOT. Laughing
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159522-800.jpg

Tail unit off.
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159532-800.jpg

Rear wheel off. Bought a real nice wavy disc a while back for it only to find out it's not the right one. It's got 4 holes, wheel only 3 so it's either find a new disc or a wheel to suit. Gah Evil or Very Mad
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159536-800.jpg

Tyre off and bit of nitromorse slapped on.

Lots of nitromors, om nom nom nom. Tasty.

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159543-800.jpg

Nitro is a bitch. Left it on for 30minutes then started scrubbing with wirewool, my rubber gloves were torn to shreds.

After 2 coats I decided this will do.

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159545-800.jpg

Thought I was going to get away easy with polishing because the rim looked so nice and smooth while it was painted then I was greeted with this. Loads of machining lines!

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159546-full.jpg

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159547-800.jpg

Not to worry, I bought a polishing kit.

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159594-800.jpg

Had a go and it was f**king useless, just had to do it by hand first anyway starting with 150 grit and working my way up. Neutral

Hugger
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159549-800.jpg

Hugger sanded and primed.
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159556-800.jpg

Hugger sprayed, finish is pretty good. Very Happy

Rim polished.

This buffed it up from about 400 grit in this photo. Not good enough so just worked my way up to 1500 and tried again which I'm happy enough with. Not perfect but good enough for me.
https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C01%5C24%5Cbikepics-1159560-800.jpg

I've got more photos somewhere but I don't know where. Thinking

I'll be getting a stainless system as soon as I can afford it but eventually I want to make my own, think that'll do for next year.

A few bits and pieces I've gathered up and a few more not in this photo. Cool

Nicely done Thumbs Up

I found the same using polishing mops - just couldn't get them to work.

With patience, wet and dry would get those rims up like chrome.

Let me know how that front end conversion goes - thinking of doing one myself because I've found the standard forks are utter pish! Good luck with the project

The money you spend on a USD Fork conversion you could just get your forks rebuilt with stiffer springs and set up for yourself, And still have change.

Thats why my NC29 has had the forks rebuilt and set up by Colin at 100% and its also running a CBR6 rear shock. All set up for myself. Smile

It's more fun this way, no harm putting something a little newer on and I get to use these brakes. Cool

Only the best. Wink

The forks are about 30mm shorter than standard but with the design of the yokes this should only be the same as raising the forks 10-15mm through the yokes. This shouldn't throw it off too badly. Thinking
