Decided to clean/defrost the fridge and freezer this weekend.

Its been a while, so its taken me since yesterday (switched it off, slowly defrosting and cooking stuff, rather than using the traditional "daughter's industrial hairdryer/screwdriver method")

So there's still those couple of bottles of "interestingly-flavoured" spring water which I purchased probably over 18 months ago now, and still haven't got round to consuming/trying out their potency.

(should have taken them up to Enfield a couple of weeks ago, totally didn't think of it, doh!)

But the use-by date is now March 2012.

Seeing as how my policy was to throw everything out beyond the use-by date - except for the jar of wallies (they're pickled, anyway) and the bottle of tamarind sauce (which is made by Maggi, after all, and everybody knows Maggi products are indestructable) ... and my fridge is now free of crusty jars and bottles!

... except for the bottles of Co-op spring water.

Why would they have a use-by date? Its spring water, FFS!

What gets me confused is the Mineral Water they have. There was even an advert once.

"This mineral water has spent thousands of years passing through a mountain"

And then they bottle it and stick a best before date on it. If its taken thousands of years to get into a bottle I dont think a best before date is going to make it taste any worse in a years time. Rolling Eyes

Dodgy stuff that spring water. The bottlers are very clever people and can predict, almost to the minute, when the contents of each bottle will have deteriorated to such an extent that it could contain toxins of a lethal level. They predicted, almost 2 years ago, that the time that this level would be reached would be 7 days ago. Not 8 days ago and not 6 days ago, 7.
I reckon that if you consume this water then you will definitely die, probably.

1. man up

2. Is it use by date or best before date?

3. Does anyone actually take those dates seriously? Just look at the food. If it is something like meat then follow the dates. Anything else it is usually pretty obvious whether it is safe to eat or not.

4 If you throw away bottled water because of the date on the bottle then you are reducing faith in humanity.

Wife is proper anal with dates, as are the rest of my Inlaw family.

My lot are the complete oppersite Laughing. I'm sure i spotted a safeway tin in the recyling last week when i popped in on mum.

I dread to think what out of date garbage mother fed me over my childhood. But i'm still here. And strangely enough, its always the inlaws that seem to suffer from whatever lurg is floating about that week, my lot rarely seem to get ill Rolling Eyes

I'd keep it abit longer then drink it. unless its going green,

USE BY dates are just that. Use by. Usually "fresh" products which go off quick and can spoil, like milk, meats, dairy and stuff

BEST BEFORE dates are just that. Dried foods (pasta), tinned stuff etc.

The reason for bottled water (and all bottled drinks) is that over time the plastic can degrade and contaminate the water. (I do not know why some bottled water in glass bottles sometimes has dates on though, but where I used to work had loads of glass bottles of water and they only had a BOTTLED ON date not a drink by date.)

Water bottles are generally made out of PET, or polyethylene terephthalate. This degrades in several ways but hydrolytic and thermal oxidation are the most important as these result in discolouration and formation of acetaldehyde.

At stupidly low concentrations, acetaldehyde causes a very nasty taste in water. Not only that but it is believed to be a carcinogen in humans.

This is why there are use-by dates on bottled water. Smile.

I am very anal with dates, I will not use something if it is past or on it's best before or use by date. This is one manifestation of my OCD.

I have no problem with it, not like it's a big issue.

Seriously? First the "I cry at chick flicks" thread, now "I'm scared of water".

Here's the bar of Galaxy Caramel I found in the cupboard, tasted a bit odd but I haven't died yet.
Also had a yoghurt corner thing that was 5 weeks past it's use by date, bit of water on top of the yoghurt but otherwise fine.

Also, same as water, why do 'preserves' and pickled things have dates on them?

Was the chocolate white Smile

Apart from Yoghurt, milk and chicken (Won't go near even if I think I think it smells odd).

Only check the best before/Use by dates, once I've finished eating the food and thought it tasted a bit odd.

As for water. Try drinking from an army water bottle, even if it's fresh, it tastes like it was in the bottle since time began. After this most water tastes fresh Smile

Well if its a question of the plastics being leached in there, I guess if I decant it into a glass bottle, the problem will no longer occur.

I'm prepared to drink it.
Just not yet.
The time has to be right Laughing

I rarely have issues about eating "out of date" things, provided they don't smell bad, and I have a fairly sharp sense of smell.

Although I do know some things can be bad and not smell, so far in my life I've managed to avoid being taken TOO ill (apart from just once, with some mince I knew I was pushing my luck with).

Thing is, I had to clean out the fridge/freezer, cos I couldnt even see two shelves of the freezer's contents, they were so iced in. Its still switched off, even now, cos the top shelf still isn't defrosted properly.

Fridge is as clean as a whistle now, with only a few bits in there.
Its just that now the boyfriend is here more often, he's noticed I'm not averse to picking the mould off bread or cheese, and is starting to make the odd sarky remark ( Laughing ) ... so I thought I would dispose of all the evidence of my former slovenly single lifestyle.

But the water will keep in glass bottles, maybe an old wine bottle, till I'm ready for it Wink

I go by the adage that if my cats stick their noses up at it or it has grown fur then it is inedible, have never taken a blind bit of notice of sell by or use by dates, mind you this is coming from the woman who drinks tap water in India with no ill effects.

Plastic degradation causes hormone like substances to be secreted into the water. These hormone like substances act like Oestrogen, giving men man-tits.

How is that going to affect you exactly Hellkat? Smile
