Well, the hours have paid off on the R1, it's turned out to be an ace bike. Just gotta throw the new clutch in on Tues or Weds when it arrives, then I can start putting some of my time into the Chaly, which has been patiently waiting in my garage for months now!
I've more or less got all the main components to build it up, just need to get the frame painted, and I need a new swing arm, as the stock Honda one is a bit rotten.
Eying up the alloy under-braced ones from OORacing.
So pieced everything together yesterday, just to see where I stand with what I've got.

Ride height is a little too high at the front, and the forks are already pulled through the yokes further than they should be.
I'm going to swap the forks over from my race pit, as they have been shortened, and have a tiny ammount of travel in them.
It'll also improve my race bike, by giving them forks with more travel.

The overall 'look' I'm going for, will be something similar to this;

Granted, it is a long way off.
The engine of choice is this which I have built specefically for the Chaly.
It's a Zongshen 155, which is the latest, and top rated motor on the pit bike market.
I've fitted an uprated 6 plate clutch into it, And it's running a genuine Mikuni VM26 carb.
Should be good for 15/16hp.

It's still only a 4 speed engine, but it'll be reasonably reliable, and will pack enough power to absolutely smash the majority of peds, and 125s on the road.
Will get some more updatetes once things progress.

As much as I want this thing on the road asap, I think it's going to be a very long project.
Where it's a genuine Honda, and an early one at that, it's not cheap to pick shit up like it is with the pit bikes, and even with the R1.
Parts for this are like rocking horse shite! Plus, I want it painting properly etc.
Got this weekend off, gotta get the stem bolt machined a little more, and I'm going to make up some forks I think, as the ones I've got will be too long even if I shorten the stanchions.
I've a slightly different style of forks, with longer stanchions, but shorter legs.
Gonna have a go at fitting the shorter stanchions in the shorter leg forks. Maybe make some super mini-pit style forks.
I want the front as low as possible. |
