PostPosted: 12:12 - 11 Apr 2012    Post subject: Rear Bearings have fallen out (ZX6R G1) - Advice Needed Reply with quote

Hi folks,

Just took my wheel off my ninja (G1) to take it to get a hole plugged which only cost £6.00, bargain. Anyway I came home to put it all back together, picked up my rear sprocket and noticed loads of metal shavings, turned it around and the bearings pretty much fell out of it, along with more metal shavings and loads of ball bearings.

Now, I'm no expert but something tell's me that this shouldn't happen.

I just need advice on how to go about this in terms of warranty. I was told that consumables on the bike would not come under warranty but this isn't a consumable is it? I'm just concerned I'm going to get screwed over.

Anyway I took a good few pictures to show you, and hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about can tell me how bad this is.

Thank you in advance.

How long have you owned the bike? looks like poor maintenance and a failed seal.

EDIT:
Count yourself lucky it didn't fail while you were riding.

From a dealer?

Take exactly what you have in that photo to dealer, ask them to replace the bearing otherwise you want to make a complaint that they didnt check the bike fully. If that failed whilst riding, you'd know about it (quite possible we wouldn't if it was a spirited ride...hmm)

If its not a dealer, get new bearings and have a look over the whole bike, some form of dodgy repair would make me quite dubious..

Yes from a dealer about 3 weeks ago. I've ridden in about 7-8 times that's it. The dealer said it had a full service and everything checked over.

There's no way they can turn me down is there? I'm fully within my right to get this sorted.

Out of curiosity what would have happened if it had fucked up while i was say on the motorway?

The wheel could of possibly locked up if the bearing failed. Was it not noisy at all? To be honest the RRP Of the sprocket bearing is about £8 and it takes about 10 - 15 Minutes to fit. They would be stupid to argue with you over it as it would not look good for buisness.

"How does sir like his coffin" would be the worst outcome.

Skidding along the floor after a rear lockup and being run over/smashing into central res.

General pain and write off is the best outcome

Ha ha, ok....thank fuck I had a flat then otherwise i'd have ridden it into an early grave.

I didn't hear any unnecessary noise, well I wouldn't have noticed with the sound that comes out of the exhaust.

I feel quite lucky.

Maybe nothing, maybe a touch of death, who knows?

Are they a big dealer or just a local small time shop? I would take the wheel to them and show what happened. If it was me I would REALLY like to have the bike checked out by some one else.

EDIT: ignore the bit I deleted, I realised it was the sprocket carrier afterwards. I'm surprised you never noticed when you removed it.

My only other thought is how did the tyre fitter attach the wheel to his machine? I generally do it myself so have very little idea of how it works.

Well I pulled the sprocket out and those rubber things that are underneath the sprocket. So it's the bearing in the sprocket part that has the issues, sorry not technically gifted, maybe those bearings aren't as important as wheel bearings.. I dunno if the are wheel bearings...im unsure.

I'm with Marki.

Get it to the dealer, just the wheel with all the offending crap.

Demand they recheck it, then inform them you are getting it checked at an independant garage afterwards... even if you don't it may make them put a spring in their step to sort it.

You could even write a letter and ask the manager/owner of said dealership to accept they are rechecking it and stuff, depends how far you want to go.

It's only the sprocket carrier bearing, but usually that is a sign the others are on the way out, get all 3 changed.

PS all long as the other 2 bearings where good I doubt you would have noticed that one collapse.

Bearing could have gone like that pretty quick.
Fitting replacements is no big deal really but as above you surely need three when it's gone completely.
Usually something will feel 'not right' before things start falling out and give really dangerous handling.
With a new to you bike the subtle change will be less obvious.

Hey thanks for all your help guys. I've just spoken to the dealer and he said send him the photo's and he will get his head mechanic to phone me tomorrow. I mentioned that it was a warranty issue and he said yes no problem.

So I guess once I get this sorted I should take the bike down to them to check all the bearings.

Update: Just come back from the dealer. Said I'm not happy and told them that I was worried that if this bearing has gone then what about the wheel bearings. So they agreed to change all the bearings on the bike.

Nice to see the dealers living up to their warranty.
