Posted: 18:21 - 15 Apr 2012 Post subject: Time to start rebuilding the GPz |
 |
|
Since it's all in bits in the wife's kids garage (basically got thrown out of the garage by a 9 year old the other day because it was 'his garage'), anyway... I've decided to throw some of it back together and bring it round my place to work on it...
So, silly question number 1:
I have the manual for a GPz 750 which looks nothing like my bike, and it says that I have to put something like 250ml of fork oil in, (I'm assuming that's each side), but the manual for the 900 which does look like my bike (but definitely 750 engine), says that the top up is 250ml, but if they have been stripped down and rebuilt (which they have) it's 338ml or there abouts... so which one do I go with?
Silly question 2: I'm unsure of what the valve clearances are supposed to be, again the 750 manual says one thing and the 900 says different... should I just go with what the 900 is telling me and adjust later if needed?
Silly question 3: when I bring the bike to mine it's mostly uphill, being in my fragile state (carrying a 50cc engine, drive and rear wheel with a bag of tools damn near killed me), would it be better to bring the bike round in bits and start building it here or make a rolling chassis, or put the engine in and take lots of breaks. (it's about a mile)
Silly question 4: during the rebuild of the clutch one of the bolts got snapped in the cage, so thinking I'd be able to just push the bolt through the back with another, got a bolt the same size and started to tighten it up gently.... that one snapped too, I've now drilled and retapped the hole with a larger bolt, will this affect the clutch (I've pulled the lever a few times before putting the side on and everything moves as it should, but will the weight of this bolt affect it and would it be worth just buying a new cage to save the hassle? (money is very short though)
Thanks in advance |

look at the base of the barrels, does it say 750 or 900. Not entirely sure with the later quakers, but 750-900 engine swaps are quite common on older bikes. I run a 900 in my frame, mainly because it cost the same amount to buy as a 750. ____________________ XX XXXx

so what you have is a bike that looks like a gpz900r but has a 750 engine?
Do you have the V5?
im going to go out on a whim here and say its not a ringer, its a gpz750r, exactly the same as the gpz900r just smaller diameter barrels, and a few other differences.
So, the gpz900r manual you have is great and covers almost everything you need to know and the 750 manual you have is for the early a1/a3 aircooled 750s not the later watercooled R model.
What you need, to cover the gaps left by the 900r manual would be a gpz750r manual supplement, one i so happen to have here from when I had my gpz750R, infact, its once i could probably be persuaded to part with for reimbursement of postage, pm me if your interested.
Cheers

I suspect what you have is a GPz750R.
Is this the manual you need?

right, i'll say it again.
the manual you have for the air cooled 750? throw it in the back of your shed, you dont need it, its not relevant.
the manual for the gpz900r? use it
the gpz750r manual supplement i offered for postage might be a good idea as it the gpz900r manual doesnt say whats different about the 750, only the supplement covers that.
IIRC there are a few minor wiring differences and some toque setting differences as well as the engine and gearbox.
Cheers
