Having finally hassled Mrs Nop through her direct access course we now need a bike for Her. Next year I would like to ride down to, then across the Pyrenees and back home over the course of about 3 weeks. So It will need to carry camping gear etc. Not so much though, we are both fairly spartan when it comes to roughing it across country.

I have a mid 80's XT600 that I have kitted out for touring. Panniers, big tank and comfy seat. The problem is I am not so sure what bike Mrs Nop should have. She says she likes the look of the new Triumph tiger adventure bike. It is slightly out of our budget though.

Requirements:

1. Between 400-700CC
2. Less than 150KG
3. Be capable of riding on fire roads
4. Have some basic fairing (i.e. a screen)
5. Simple to maintain
6. Comfortable enough for long distances
7. Suitable for commuting
8. budget of £1K

The longer we wait the bigger the budget will become, we are saving in the bike fund. Of course the above requirements are flexible to a degree, do you have any suggestions?

I was thinking 650cc Kawasaki Versys, even though it's 197Kg, then I got to your budget. Up that by another grand, and you might find a good V for that. Good hunting.

Probably better prices out there, I just copypasta'd the first one.

KLE500 suits all but the budget. You gonna struggle to find anything worth having that will suit all your needs at that sort of budget.

Drop the 'fire roads' bit and a whole world of bikes become options.

Why do you want a touring bike which only weights 150kg? You could get some enduro, they are light.

Yeah, the 150kg restriction does seem a bit arbitrary and pretty much restricts you to enduro machines, which won't tick off the rest of the boxes.

The 150KG limit is kind of arbitrary. It is because Mrs Nop isn't that strong.

Lets just drop the weight limit (but do not go all gold wing on me here) and ignore the budget. £1K is how much we have just now, we are saving a couple of 100 each month.

I have seen this BMW near my home. I have never had a BMW before. How hard are they to maintain?

She'll be pulling over to wait for you on the main roads.

With proper technique how to pick up a motorcycle it doesn't matter how heavy it is and taller the bike is easier it is to pick it up.

There are 3 situations where you can feel the weight, braking, accelerating and pushing it to a near gas station Laughing

Uh, tank range?

Your budget doesn't really give you a lot of choice. £1K is the magic number that we're all chasing for a proper bike with a long MOT and several thousand miles of trouble free larks.

If you can stretch to £1600 you're into Deauville territory. You might be able to score a Divvy 900 for around that money as well. The offroad stuff, bleurgh, blokes go round the world on R1s.
