I saw some electric motorcycles buzzing around London the other day, it was a little gang,

The bikes were quite boxy in shape it almost looked like they were riding robocop

Whats you take on electric bikes, I think they are great, not much cheaper to run but according to mythbusters bikes pollute more than cars by giving off more dangerous gases.

The electric bikes I have seen are all horrifically ugly. I wish companies didn't try so hard to look futuristic, it just looks awful.

You've pretty much nailed my personality there. I don't deny it.

But do you really think this looks good?

I don't like all the electric bikes, but the two you've posted so far have been decent, I'd definitely be interested in the first one if the price were right and it didn't have such silly steering.

They are both concepts though, all concepts have an air of oddity about them. Real electronic bikes look like:

Make it pointier, and black. Also, lose the headlamp unit - it's crap. Then it'd probably sell pretty well.

As hardcore atheist, I am more likely to be found in a church than riding one of those pieces of shit. Electric vehicles are chronically useless and are simply a PR stunt by companies to shut the tree people up.

At the moment, yes. Given time and enough R&D money, they'll become less so and will be subject to more market uptake, I'm sure.

Tell me this ain't pretty, I dare you :

https://www.wired.com/images_blogs/autopia/2012/02/Honda-RC-E-02.jpg

If electric bikes looked like real bikes, and the range they could travel on a single charge was higher, and there were more opportunities for charging them, they'd be viable. In the back of bike, there's one that has a 100 mile range. Which is realistically a 45 miles trip away from home and then 45 miles back. Whilst im not saying that everyone does massive trips when they go on their bike, it would be nice to have the ability.

As for charging them, I have encountered one electric vehicle charging point, at my Uni (Kingston). I imagine that's because they race an electric motorcycle in the TT Zero though.

Electric bikes are certainly the way the world is going, but there are (as with all new technology) many little things to work out yet. The demand has to be there as well. Electric commuter bikes and scooters will be the first major advances I feel.

Realistically, in the UK you'll hit some hills and that'll drop sharply.

I've seen them at the Whitelee Wind Farm (natch) and bizarrely, there's two of them at "Scotland's Secret Bunker". Presumably some ecomental works there and agitated to have them put in so that he could get home again. Wink

They tested an electric car with a stated range of 250 miles in Devon, and it got about 30 miles before it ran out of juice Laughing

Our friends at Honda appear to have mispelt the logo on the forks, it should have a D on the end.

Oh, incredibly eloquently put. You sir are a genius, now you've said it so well I can't understand why a whole industry is headed down this path. Quick, send an email to the head of all the automotive firms and tell them 'Hydrogen is the future anyway, forget this all electric crap.'

One thing though... How would hydrogen be converted into kinetic energy? Maybe we could just burn it like petrol in an ICE? Well, not really as it's incredibly inefficient and incredibly volatile. What we need is a a way of 'burning' the hydrogen safely in a contained unit and then transferring that energy out. So, hydrogen fuel cell it is! But wait! What's this? The fuel cell provides the energy as electricity? If only we'd been developing electric vehicles so that the powertrains were well understood and all those niggles and kinks were sorted...

In case you haven't got it from my story - hydrogen is likely the future, but it's not ready yet. You also need to separate energy storage (petrol, hydrogen, batteries) from the means of converting that energy into kinetic energy (electric motor, ICE). Electric vehicles are a stepping stone and the fact that the automotive industry is getting behind them should show you that it's not all 'crap'.
