So, when I was younger I was in a car accident, this means my right ankle is now fused (no movement what so ever) and is also constantly swollen. This has made it very difficult finding boots, the main problems not being able to bend my foot into the boot, and the major issue being the swelling in my ankle is precisely where most boots zip up on the inside of the foot. This has led to me trying on sizes which are too big, I'm really an 11 (~45.5) but I'm looking at 47s to even get my foot in.

I'm looking for a boot with some protection and preferably waterproof. At the moment I'm looking at the Arlen Ness 1282 which do zip up on the inside but I manage to get on, but they are a 47. The others are the Dainese ST TRQ-Tour GTX Boots. These zip up at the back. They are a hell of a challenge to get on and off but don’t feel too bad once on. I have only tried these in a 46, and since I cant find anywhere which stocks a 47 (I live in London) it looks like I might have to order them into JS, pay for them, wait a week to even try them on.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Dainese vs Arlen Ness in terms of quality?

Any suggestions/recommendations for boots for big ankles – which preferably zip up on the outside or rear? (also the zip must go quite low because of the inability to bend)

I've tried on more or less every pair of boots in stock in js Watford, js new malden, various hein geriks and infinitys. Although few places stocked 47s I don’t really fancy handing over a grand for them to order in some boots for me to try, but if that’s the way it is then that’s the way it is.

Thanks

My current boots - zero protection and about as waterproof as a paper bag - ive only been riding for 4 months, they were enough to get me started.

arlen ness 1282 - quite tight even in a size too big. would hate to yank the zip off in the first week.

Dainese ST TRQ-Tour GTX Boots - probably need to try in a 47

Have you tried a pair with ratchety type fastenings?

This type of stuff:

I have a cheaper pair with velcro fastenings, the trouble is that there is a leather flap inside which extends to the top of the boot to keep it waterproof and upi do need to flex the ankle to get it on.

A frend of mine with a similar problem wears a type of square toed cowboy boot or riggers.

If you can get your foot into an unlaced combat boot it may be worth looking at getting a combat boot and buying a zip to replace the laces. Not as protective as a bike boot but possibly more comfortable to you. It's all a trade off.

Best advice? Get yourself down to your local hein gericke and go through their stock, just trying them on and fidning what is comfortable for you.

Then go the BMF ina couple of weeks on the Sunday and pick up a pair in their bargain tent, what you'll save will easily cover fuel and entry. Thumbs Up

I have tried some on, they were more full on motocross boots (sidi i think) they went on fine but with no movement in the sole and a chunkey toe i couldnt get near my gear shifter (upright position of the street triple also not going in my favour) - this was a real shame as they felt great and where by far the easiest to get on and off. A softer soled boot with these type of fastenings would be ideal.

the ones you have linked to were only available up to a 43/44 i think and the guy in the shop said they were end of line, so nothing out back and nothing more coming

They're the ones I had, soles not super flexy, but enough to walk in. If you're within striking distance of the factory you could go try some alt-bergs on.

I use Rock Wood boots for riding, as they are soft around the ankle but strong leather elsewhere...I too suffered foot/ankle damage and my range of movement is massively reduced...but my foot/ankle also suffer much pain...so wearing normal bike boots is not an option.

I also wear 'walker' gaiters to give my ankles extra protection against the weather. Thumbs Up

i think i must have tried on 40 pairs of boots over the last few days, i might head down to hg in clapham, i think thats a larger store than the ones ive been to, ive exhausted infinity and JS - unless they are going to get newer models in.

I never really thought about a combat boot, something worth looking into.

the Dainese also have a flap which extends to the top, but i guess it being a shorter boot its not too bad - no non waterproof ones dont have this and they are quite easy to get into

So a trip to Richmond is out of the question, because feet comfort and safety are just not that important to you.... because if you damage these ones you can grow another pair.... Thinking

Dude, you only get one pair of feet, they are already damaged, you would think that they deserve the best treatment to keep them working to the very end of your shelf life...!!

Just a thought. Idea

Hey, I do appreciate the advice, I'm trying to take in the suggestions for each reply before moving onto the next, I was answering herulach before your link to the other thread came up. I’ve read through the altberg thread and it seems a very good option for me. 500 miles is a hell of a round trip, but I’ll be heading up that way soon to visit family.

I would give some consideration to grade 1 army surplus goretex lined boots. About £35 delivered, tough, solid sole, hard (but not steel) toecaps, waterproof (tested wading through Highland peat bogs in torrential rain) they're essentially all that I wear now for work and play, on and off the bike.

Avoid the higher "para" boots, and consider an alternative fastening mechanism to replace the laces if you have problems with them - even if you pay to get them professionally altered, it'll still come out cheaper than custom bike boots.

Ironically, the only thing they're lacking is hard ankle protection, but I've never been that convinced by the utility of a couple of little plastic disks anyway.

I`d phone them and book an appointment for a fitting on the dates your planning to be up north, and don`t forget to take your regular riding pants, socks etc, as they are also factors that need to be taken into consideration when being measured up

+1

Altbergs are outstanding boots to begin with, coupled with them being able to fit them exactly to your needs. It's a winning combo. Smile
