Just read that the Galaxy S2 gets the choice to upgrade from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. I was going to buy one but plumped for the slower Galaxy Nexus instead to get the later operating system (and the HD screen res). The s2 is a faster phone but that screen on the Nexus is just wicked.

Anyone done it/going to be BCF's guinea-pig?

I expect the useless cunting retards at Virgin Mobile will, as usual, vomit forth some sort of half-arsed lashup which bricks your phone. By November.

I've been running a modified ICS rom for a few days now. It's alright. Battery seems to be better.

What i'm more excited about is today samsung released the kernel source for ICS. So things like Back Light Notifications can be added.

I'm running this rom;
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274

I tried CM9 Nightly, was pretty buggy so I'm sticking with that till CM9 matures.

Unless you're flashing bootloaders you can't really fuck up the phone. I've soft bricked mine a few times, just reflash them no big deal.

it didn't work for me....
ODIN flashes it and says it completes successfully. however when it reboots it hangs on the boot screen

seems, that i needed to flash it twice. I did remove the SD card on the 2nd flash, so wonder if that had anything to do with it

Now that the Kernel source is out it seems like people have been busy patching it. Looking forward to flashing this one this evening;

https://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2012/03/20/siyahkernel-v3-0beta4-for-ics-only/

Miss having BLN on ICS.

One other thing on the Sammy ICS and it's derivatives, there's an SMS duplication bug when using any 3rd party app which is a bit of a shitter.

Isn't it wise to wait a couple of weeks and let the guinea pigs fuck up their phones first until the creases are ironed out?

You speak to me as though you believe I am not a Guinea pig. Very Happy

Unless it's bootloader flashing there's little chance of a proper fuck up.

Aside from general dicking about with beta roms you do gain a lot more functionality by rooting the device. From being able to disable the boot sound (stupid idea to have that on full volume by default) to setting up tasker rules and deleting bloatwear from your carrier, well worth it.

Also ODIN is leaked Samsung software. When you send it in for a repair they'll use that to flash your phone to stock. So if you get a stock Samsung ROM, checked the MD5 and are using ODIN, you're in pretty safe hands.

i have to say I prefer the Resurrection ROM over the Lite'ning ROM. seems much more polished.
I tried the CM9 ROM quite a while ago and it was very buggy back then. depending on how this Resurrection ROM goes i may never switch back to CM.

I rooted it the day I got it just to unlock it, other than that I haven't bothered tweaking with it.

From what I read there's like 100 different OS's and each one has it's own quirks and tweaks etc, I honestly cannot be bothered going through them all and testing them when I stand a good chance of fucking it up each time, this is why I preferred the iPhone = 1 Jailbreak, everything sorted, no messing.

I think if you have countless hours to sit and fuck around with it then the S2 is a dream in terms of rooting and farting around with it, but the sheer volume of stuff out there has really put me off playing with it, yet the S3 is due out next month I believe.

I'll see what Apple come out with and if it's even close to the S2 I'll go back to apple for the sake of simplicity.

you really don't understand what the difference between a custom ROM and rooting is.
rooting is exactly the same as jailbreak on iOS.
using a custom ROM is like choosing windows 7 home, windows 7 professional, windows ultimate. they each have different bits of software
I do agree with you though. apple do know how to make a product that is very user friendly. if the s2 wasn't so good I would have had the iphone

Yeah but thats the problem, tons of ROMS each unique, like I'm gonna sit for days installing each ROM, then re-installing all the apps and settings and transfer all data over, only to use it for 2 days and then go "nah this is shit, I'll try another one" and do it all again.

I want to like it but its geared towards full time nerds only, and unfortunately I'm a very busy man.

The WanamLite ROM is stock with root, available here: https://wanamlite.com/2012/03/13/romcwmxxlpq-xeo-4-0-3-deodexed-stock/

You can choose whether or not to have the default Samsung apps (not sure why you would want them...)

I've been running it for a few days - seems pretty good, but not much different!

Yeah, can be a waste of time, I've wasted my fair share. I enjoy the tinkering though and if you don't have them time don't spend it. I don't see how the number of roms around make you want to go back to an iPhone so you can jailbreak.

CaNsA wrote:

I mentioned the kernel work of someone from XDA in a previous post;
https://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/

CM9 & Samsung derived compatible. Decided not to flash just yet, didn't have time. But looks promising.

I forgot to mention, with the WanamLite ROM it keeps all your apps, settings, contacts etc so you don't need to mess about putting everything back on! It is basically an upgrade instead of a whole new ROM.
