Had a bit of trouble with my bike. Been restoring it for those who don't know and had a few niggles with no enough fuel getting through but changed the fuel tap to another one I had laying around.

Went and started it this morning to go to the MOT and it was fine. Then it stopped, so thought meh its cold and started it again. Got my gear on and revved it and it sounded like it was only running on 3 again.

I thought fuck it, as long as I get it to the MOT I can sort it out another day as I had school. Got about half a mile away from home and it stopped. Couldn't get it started and the battery was dead.

Thought it may have been fuel as I was going to get some after school anyway.

Got the fuel, put the battery back in even though it wasn't fully charged, and bumped it like 20 times as I didnt want to kill the battery and it wouldn't start. Eventually it went and was fine again. Rode it around the block once and was cool. Then rode it around again with a mate (who got the fuel) and he went one way and I went the other. As he left me the bike started being funny again. It cut out and wouldn't start. Put the choke on and got the revs up and managed to limp it home keeping the revs up. It had dropped either 1 or 2 cylinders. Turned it off and started it again a minute or so later and it was firing on all 4 again. Leads me to think that there wasn't enough fuel but it had got some again.

Don't know if I have mentioned before that when the fuel tank is left that fuel comes out. Part of the reason why there was a poor amount of fuel in it this morning as it was off the bike for a while. Think it could be the tap is shit. When it is up, which I think is off but it may be prime, it has a steady stream coming out, same with reserve. When its in the on position, it drips every few seconds.

So I'm going to take it around the block again later on but my question is this. Why does it keep cutting out? Is it because the fuel tap is dodgy and isn't giving me enough fuel? I have sourced another for £15 delivered, is it worth a shot?

Didn't see your post but only got half as far as last time and it konked out. So didn't try opening the fuel cap. What difference would it make and how would I cure it?

Not a fuel tap issue then as it just runs dry. Started straight away off the button though. Battery is fucked again though.

The cap has a breather that can stop fuel flow if it has crud in it.

You could also have problem with the tap, or the vacuum hose. Check the hose for perishing and splits. The tap will have a little diaphragm with a piston to control the fuel flow. If the diaphragm is damaged it can also cut the fuel off at awkward moments and eventually refuse to work at all.

Where is the said breather? I think I am gonna go with my gut and buy this fuel tap. Even if it doesn't work, it will stop me losing fuel whenever I take the tank off!

It is part of the cap itself. Sometimes the vent it via the keyhole, others you will find a hole somewhere.

Depending on the cap you may be able to take it apart and clean it up.

Ah okay cool.

I'll have a look tomorrow, if not then I'll just buy a new one as the current key is ready to go and the cap makes the rest of the tank look shoddy (all though the paintwork is going downhill)

Well I paid for the fuel tap this morning, he said he was gonna post this afternoon so hopefully he did.

Just taken apart the fuel cap. Couldn't see anything but took apart the one that came with my new tap and the difference in condition is ridiculous! Everything is soo much better on it but I can't swap the lock over. One if the things k noticed was a small brass part with two small holes in it. On my current one you can hardly see it. No way of changing that part over and can't unblock it.

Wish I could change the lock over though cos the whole condition is pretty much new to be honest.

So gonna buy one for just over £20 and that should be here Monday, fuel tap should be here tomorrow. Put it all on and run it around the block for a few laps say 3 times spread out over a few hours. If all is well then book my MOT. Hopefully ill make it there this time Laughing maybe have it done before next weekend

And I can't get to the breakers tomorrow as they open and shut the time I am working. Also whats the guarantee that wont be blocked too? I'll just buy a new one, that way I can rule it out.

Was just gonna update this anyway Razz

Fitted the new tap and cap. Bike seems to run and not stop. Took it around the block twice and its okay. Will go again later on and if all is good then I will book my MOT.

I can hear that the fuel cap is working cos you can hear gases escaping when I've never heard it before.

It does have a bit of a flatspot but it could just be fuel so I'll run it, change the fuel, balance the carbs and fit new plugs and maybe treat the carbs to some o rings... maybe Wink

And the bike fell over, snapped a lever and bent the footpeg, greeeeaaaaaat.
