hi, im looking at doing a tour through the black forrest and some of the alps in august and am looking at getting a decent satnav for the trip,

ive already planned my route on google maps but i dont know how to get it from there onto a sat nav,
the 2 satnavs i have seen that have european maps, 5'' screen e.c.t. and still be around £100 are the ones in the title,

my question is
1 how do i get my route from google onto a sat nav
2 which out of the 2 sat navs will be best/ easiest to use for someone not very good with software

cheers

This is tyre:

https://www.tyretotravel.com/

Get the non ad one for €10 or with ads for free. Read the help section for full details. Aat firsth it looks complicated but it isn't experiment with some short trips. Basically you will be setting waypoints using google maps then saving those points to your satnav which will navigate you from point to point. The more waypoints the less chance your sat nav will take you a different route.

I'm also off to the black forest next week (wooooohooooo) (see https://www.old-gits.org/thenexttrip.htm) so already have a few routes round there saved on sat nav (pm me if you want copies emailed). Also staying on for an extra week to explore for a bit more (maybe Austria).

Thumbs Up

GPS costs nothing to use on a phone....

Just get one of the apps that have maps built into the phone and its your garmin/tom tom all in one handy pack.
I use Co pilot on my phone and its good. You just need a power supply for your phone, but you will need one for any sat nav anyway.
Phone in pocket and directions via bluetooth (or wired if you don't have bluetooth on your helmet) and jobs a good un...

Stuff trying to look at a sat nav will riding a bike.

GPS itself doesn't cost but unless you have a mapping product with offline maps the data charges can be high when roaming. Nokia have an offline product but you need either one of the newer Lumia 7 or 800 series or a recent symbian s60 v5 handset with gps. The symbian ovi maps is quite power hungry and needs plenty of RAM so don't skimp on the handset if you go this route. Also you need to download the maps over wifi or usb attached to PC.

Never had a lumia but do have an X6 which is ok but lacks RAM

What's the difference between looking at a satnav and a phone (both also provide verbal directions via bluetooth)?

The satnavs are akin to looking at your rev couter / speedo / your mirrors - a quick glance is all that's required.
