Looking at the above advice thread, it is marked in the red cross with dash fashion which makes it a byway, but its so nice up there and quite a famous route, i can't see bikes being allowed anywhere near it.

https://maps.the-hug.net/ if you search for 'Compton' on this link, is the area i'm looking at and there seems to be loads of interlinking routes around there also.

As an aside, are the landranger maps more suitable for finding decent routes or do people prefer the explorer ones with the smaller scale?

Bits of the Ridgeway are closed to traffic for lots of the time.

The answer if going by the letter of the law is to phone the rights of way officer at the local council and find out from them which byways are closed, the alternative less legit answer is to not bother calling the council and go on byways unless there are signs or such like to say they're closed.

You can get in trouble for being on byways that are closed, warning under section 59 of the road traffic act and then the second offence they can take your vehicle.

Landranger maps are good. Can make them easier for finding your way around byways by highlighting all the byways with a green highlighter. Smile

Personally, I've always preferred the Explorer for the added detail, but realistically when on the bike you could end up having to use several as the distances covered are so much greater than when on foot/cycle. A highlighted Landranger seems to be the most commonly used and I'd guess given that it's the experienced ones doing it, it's because it works best Wink

Also, you could try joining your local TRF, as they seem to be on the ball as far as local closures etc are concerned.

Right, I took an unscheduled wander down there today to see about signage and ended up getting very muddy Mr. Green , as it decided to piss it down.

Those maxxis supermoto tyres aren't very clever off road either. Was hoping to come back and report about how excellent I am at having not fallen off, but alas I stacked it twice and had plenty more classified as nearly Razz

Off the A417 near Streatley, there is a road marked dead end called Rectory Road, if you follow this to the end, it turns into the ridgeway, there is a massive sign at the beginning telling you the sections motorbike are allowed on (which impressed me for local government) and it turns out there is only this particular stretch about a 7-8 mile section (which having ridden a lot of today is plenty, I was fucked Laughing ). There are also a lot of interlinking byways in this section which are all marked on the map as byways, so these probably double the amount of track in terms of distance.

The ridgeway itself stops becoming accesible just before you get to the A34, but looking at the maps there are interlinking byways that can take you all the way south as far as the M4 at Chieveley, so there is loads to be seen.

There only catch to all this, is that its only accesible between the end of April and the beginning of October, lots of these https://www.learning2drive.co.uk/images/no_vehicles.jpg
everywhere with those dates underneath.

This has definately sparked my interest in a bit of green laning though, so will have to see if I can sort out a more suitable bike alongside the R30. Thumbs Up

It's inaccurate and largely incomplete, for this part of the world at least. I'll stick with the better online resources that have been out there personally Wink
