Sorry to say but the old addage " you buy cheap, you buy twice" seems to apply here. You could look at one of those chap cagoul/waterproof jackets to go under the one that leaks but it wont breathe and you'll most likely get wet and cold through sweat eventually. ____________________ https://bikechatter.net

I've got a couple of these that keep the rain from getting my shirt collar damp on wet commutes. Keeps you warm in winter, too - I tuck it right up under my helmet then. They do get a bit whiffy when they've been wet a few times, that's why I got 2 so I can wash one and wear one. ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

For someone who tests gear on their own website you have just shown you complete lack of knowledge and just how little you ride in the rain.
If the collar is loose on your jacket you will get rain inside, if it is too tight you wont do it up and get rain inside. This will happen regardless of whether it is a cheap jacket or an expensive GoreTex one. Just do what the professionals do and take a ride to your nearest bike shop and purchase a simple shell over jacket to wear as a top layer when it rains. |
I ride in the rain plenty, actually more often than in the dry it would seem.
I have tested of plenty of gear and have never had a jacket that fitted properly but would not do up round the collar, I have an 18.5" neck too, if I bought a jacket that wouldnt do up properly I would swap it for one that did so yes, what I say I stand by.
By his own admission, he bought a cheap jacket so by my reckoning he chose his item based on price rather than it actually fitting him correctly - IE - you buy cheap, you buy twice.
There was no mention of the collar in his post either, just that it didnt fit correctly and was cheap
And the shell you mention is what I suggested already but again, he buys twice - no? ____________________ https://bikechatter.net

And this is the bit where experience comes into it.
Not even GorTex will keep you dry in extended downpours. As the temperature drops with the rain so does GoreTex's ability to keep you dry. Although breathable the sweat need to be vapour to pass through, in the cold it isn't. On top of this only GoreTex ProShell has the GoreTex layer bonded to the outer layer thus stopping the garment becoming saturated with water between the layers. GoreTex Performance shell on the other hand tends to use a composite of two or three layers with the GoreTex on the inside or middle layer thus the shell does get saturated and you get small amounts of water forced in where there are creases in the GoreTex such as the armpits, very few garments have drainage holes to let this water out either.
The way around these problems if you don't have GoreTex ProShell gear is to (you've guessed it) buy a simple shell over jacket. So it doesn't really matter how much you spend until you start spending £900+ on a jacket you still need a shell over jacket if you want to stay warm and dry.
This isn't just my experience either, it is the experience of 100's of professional riders. |
I wasn't saying that he needed to spend £900+ on a jacket. I was stating (quite rightly I might add) that based on his suggestion that he bought an incorrectly fitting jacket on the cheap that he will have to buy another solution to rectify getting wet.
Incidentally, I until recently have been wearing a Richa Rix 2 jacket and camargue trousers, BOTH have kept me 100% skin dry in huge downpours as long as the internal wet liner was in place. I wore this all through 2011 up to November.
I recently switched to wearing an Alpinestars Goretex Excursion 2 piece textile set and even in this shocking bout of wet weather it remained 100% skin dry. This was in winter and worked just fine for the journey's I put in, that was either off to meetings, down to trade events and putting miles in for reviewing also.
Although they are 2 very different products and 2 different price points they do the job as intended, I appreciate you might have more experience in the rain J, but as a courier I would expect you would have - MOST average riders don't need 100% monsoon proof waterproof gear for extended periods but stuff that can last out while they get to their destination. ____________________ https://bikechatter.net
