Got my bike out this morning, not touched since Friday, hit the ignition and bike started immediately, went to the docs at about 11 am, bike started fine again, cane out of docs about 45 mins later, bike was still warm, but it wouldn't start on the ignition, managed to push start it and went back to work.
Just came out of work and same thing happened.

Details of the problem, the ignition works a bit, I can hear the engine trying to turn over, then it starts buzzing like the battery is dead.

Could it just be down to a flat battery, the engine should at least start initially when it tries to turn over.

The engine starts absolutely fine when I push start it

I would charge the battery and see if that solves it. Or the battery may not be holding it's charge and may need replacing.

That and measuring the battery voltage at fast tickover to see if you have a reg/rec issue

13.5-14v is what you are looking for

Thumbs Up

completely forgot that I bought a battery charger a while back, will get that out tonight and charge the battery.
A couple of mates said it could be the spark plug so thats the backup plan if the charging of the battery doesn't work.

Really need to get this sorted as I got my mod 2 in a week and it won't look to good if I gotta bump start the bike to start the test lol, I'm thinking that would be an immediate fail.

I'm guessing that the doctors isn't that far from you?

If not, this is my guess:
- the bike was on low power
- you started the bike in the morning, used up a bit of power, didn't ride anywhere to charge the battery
- low power, you fired up the bike again, didn't ride very far, battery didn't charge much
- come out of the doctors, battery is just too low to start the bike

I don't know much/anything about mechanics, but I can't see how it could be the spark plug. Could someone explain that to me if they disagree?

I reckon it'll start fine though once you've charged it.

ok, so I took the side panel off and realised I have no idea what i'm doing. really dont wanna blow the bike up so just need someone to tell me exactly what to do to charge it up,

got this off a cg125 site...

There are several reasons for low battery voltage.
1. It's simply worn out, this is by far the most likely.
2. If it's a maintenance battery, see Battery in the Servicing page.
3. You have left it for months and so it has gone flat (all bike batteries loose charge over time so charge it).
4. You have been doing loads of very short journeys and it has not been able to recharge enough (not so likely if you use a kickstart),
5. The engines battery charger has stopped working or the fuse / wire connecting it to the battery has failed.
6. You have an alarm fitted and it has drained the battery.
7. You have left the lights on (if your model has that ability).

number 4 seems pretty accurate

No 4 does seem to be the culprit although it still may be a reg/rec issue aswell as being number 4.

Attach a bike charger to the (+) and (-) terminals on the battery.

I'm not aware of the reg/rec being a weak point on a CG. Usually if you have a failing reg/rec you don't just get trouble starting, but it will conk out when you're riding with symptoms that feel similar to running out of fuel. If it keeps going once you have it started then the charging circuit is probably ok, but the battery is knackered.

Charge the battery. If it is a lead-acid battery (likely) then check the electrolyte level and top up with distilled water if it is low.

I didnt have any of this when I had a dodgy reg on the NC30, just would start when and if it wanted.

It did once have symptoms like I was running out of fuel, but thats because I was Laughing

Batteries for this bike are relatively cheap so if the one on your bike is quite old it would be a wise investment to buy a new one, especially if you have your test soon.Once you have passed your test it will be a good selling point when you buy a bigger bike.

I have had good service from these people

So, I charged the battery, reconnected and bike started twice straight away, left it for the night, come morning, bitm wouldn't start. Also the headlight and neutral light were flickering, would this be an indication of bad reconnection? or battery not holding charge?

Unless you have a short draining the battery but i would buy a new one. How old is the one you have? If you dont know then replace it.

Battery is only about a year old, it failed the MOT last time (before I owned it) stating battery would not hold charge and had to be replaced.

You can check for a short by getting a multitester and checking the resistance between the chassis earth and the positive lead of the battery. Make sure the ignition is off first!

It should be open circuit, any form of continuity is bad.

If you have a leak, take each fuse out in turn, starting with the main one, and use the tester. You should be able to see which circuit is giving you troubles.

If it's really bad, you could always wire a heavy-duty switch in between the battery and the positive. Hide it somewhere and you have yourself a handy immobiliser.
