I bought myself a suzuki gs500 last week and just got it MOT'd today? But it has no tax because I haven't got the V5 back and it won't let me do it online. (Obviously for the first time ever the government don't want my money). It has Insurance too but what do I do if the rozzers stop me or am I not allowed to ride?

You're not allowed to ride with no tax unless it's to/from a pre-arranged MOT appointment.

You should be able to by tax though using the new keepers slip from the V5. Just take the new keepers slip, your MOT certificate and your insurance certificate to the post office and buy some tax.

from the direct.gov site
https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680

Tax with a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement – in person or by post

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

You can also tax at a DVLA local office or by post to selected Post Office® branches.

You will need:

Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
a completed V10 'Vehicle licence application'
insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

The New Keeper Supplement can only be used for taxing at the Post Office for two months from the date you bought your vehicle. However, the DVLA Local Office will accept it for taxing up to thirteen months from your purchase date. If it’s out of date, you’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name – please see Taxing without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement’ below.

If you have any part of the log book a P/O is ok but if it's not in your name you also need a log book application form, if you havn't any part of the log book you need to apply for a new log book, I tried at a DVLA office with all the doc's to tax + a log book application form, they wouldn't tax it but had the application form & it took a few weeks to come through, I'd waited long enough to get the bike so 2 weeks longer for a full months tax wasn't a problem.

This is why I've been trying not to read this forum so much. I need primal scream therapy each time I do!

If you tax the bike online, and you've not received the V5 yet, where do you think the tax disc will go to? The bike will be registered in the name of the old keeper, and he'll receive a tax disc through the post. If he's not trustworthy or he doesn't know your contact details, he could take it and cash it in at a post office near him!

Why don't people think about things before they take action?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
