Don't crash at edwinas, that's where most beginners come off.
If you hold a tight line coming out of gerrards there is a bit of a bump in the track thats great for brown trouser moments.
Hold a tight line round the hairpin to set you up for the bus stop.
short shift after the bus stop for devils elbow.
here's an onboard vid of Nick racing at Mallory with EMRA. He has a gear indicator which should help you. ____________________ GPZ500 sold ~ CBR600FS-2 sold ~ ZX6R sold ~ Street Triple R |

I just sat and watched that and Nick is doing alot wrong gear wise, he could improve his laptimes by 2 seconds by improving his gear selection.
BTW I am trying to find some material to actually add to this thread ____________________ Dean Stone #777

here's a vid of me there last year
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0DCI-I0EX4
go to 6mins in to see me start to get a wriggle on and pass my mate on the gsxr (and then get blocked on gerrards by some inconsiderate person diving under me)
i follow my mates for a while then let off some steam in the last part of the session/vid. the 2 guys who go past me in the paddock are the ones im following, firstly the guy with blue leathers on the silver gsxr as he's not been on many trackdays so i was watching his lines and then went past and caught up with my other mate in black leathers/black cbr600rr.
last couple of laps you see me getting tired and coming out of edwinas on both my last laps the back end steps out, heh. 1st as i hit the curb and 2nd as i was a bit ham fisted on the throttle. fun fun.
my shortlist of tips. (for ref. my trackbike is a CBR600FV with -1 front +2 rear gearing)
once into gerrards smoothly get back on the power (using 5th now, used 4th in the vid i think), get through edwinas (2nd) and straighten up the bike, short shift to 3rd and blast/straight line the essess as best you can, most people hold a tight corner here so you can pass them on the right leading up to shaws (4th to 2nd). if no ones there use the curbs/apexes. i use the middle of the track to tight as going wide will often lead you back out wide and then you'll have to cross the track to get inline for the bus stop. quick flick through, go wide out of devils elbow, short shift up and get the bike straightened up so you can blast down the straight.
and thats about it gearing may be different for your bike but thats what i use. normally geared bikes often have to go to 1st for shaws
im surely not the fastest but i have been round mallory a fair few times
hope it helps ____________________ CBR954RR - Daily toy

Thanks for all the tips guys, much appreciated
I am at work at the moment so can't watch the videos that have been linked but will have a look when I get home!
For the entry to Gerrards is it best to take a fairly wide line in and get back on the power progressively while bringing it in toward the inside of the turn and holding it there while rolling on slowly and waiting for the exit?
Or is it best to take a tight line from the start of the turn and use minimal throttle until I start rolling on during the second half of the corner? ____________________ Thundersport Pre-National Sport 600 2014 #92

When you say you roll off on at the end of the barrier, is that the barrier on the right hand side of the track? ____________________ Thundersport Pre-National Sport 600 2014 #92

... but if im in 6th down the straight im still good to knock down into 5th to keep the revs on my zx6 above 7k to stop it bogging down???[/quote]
Just dont go into 6th hold 5th Mike, hit the limiter, comfort brake at the barrier. you'll loose time on the gear change and not forgetting if you hit neutral there will screw you up and worse even crash like I did.
You basically run 5 gears around mallory using 1st gear to catapult you out of shaws, change to 2nd before the bus stop.
If the gearing is too short then the rear will just spin but 1st is the most punchiest gear on any bike.
Also out of edwinas exit in 2nd as hard as you can to 3rd then shortshift to 4th, turn in to the esses and then let the drive take you all the way through and try and brake either before or after the cress of the hill, otherwise the rear lifts in the air.
NEVER change gears midway through unless you run a quickshifter. ____________________ Dean Stone #777

Take note of the short shift out of the Elbow. It's the place to high side. ____________________ www.gogp.co.uk |

Went yesterday and had a quality day! Was pissing it down for the first half of the day until early afternoon so the track had a lot of standing water couldn't use a lot of the gear tips on here because of the slower speeds so just used 2-4.
Definitely caught the track day bug and looking at doing Rockingham in 2 weeks if funds allow!
Anyway...here's the highlights from the gopro footage with a little mix I recorded for it in the background
