This may sound silly but I've always wondered whether old brake fluid (1year+ daily use) would directly affect braking performance, I've read that old brake fluid that's absorbed moisture can over heat and cause the brakes to fail completely, but would old fluid present an obvious lack of stopping power, or is old fluid just as efficient as new fluid at braking, up until it's boiling point. I only ask because I've always changed my brake fluid on a regular basis so I've never really found out, and Google isn't helping much, thanks.

You are correct. The fluid absorbs water over time (Apart from Dot 5,silicone based)The Army and other forces use silicone based as they van leave the vehicles without worry.

As you use your brakes the kinetic heat from the discs transfers to the pads and caliper. This then goes to the fluid inside the caliper.
if water it present within the fluid the water will boil before the fluid. This makes Air inside your system and makes the brakes spongy or fail.

Brake fluid will also absorb water naturally from the atmosphere over time. This will get through the seals, hoses, master cylinder. And this is why you should change the fluid every (Year imo) time your manual states.
Hope that helps.

Water is incompressible, brake fluid is incompressible.

Until you reach the point that water is boiling out you wont notice a difference in your braking.

Boiling water makes STEAM which is a gas made of water. Air is a mixture of several gasses mainly; oxygen, nitrogen, CO2 & cetera.

Give us 100 times:

I cannot make air from water.
