Hi guys

Follow on from recent thread - Had to get a 2nd hand caliper for my '88 vt500ef as the bores in mine were shagged and the caliper was leaking. I couldnt get the old pistons out but got a local mechanic friend who managed it.

Right, all new seals and pistons installed and im bleeing away and then suddenly it starts pissin brake fluid form round one of the pistons. I take that piston out and it seems that the seals in the bore dont fit in quite so snugly as the other one....tried another new seal and its the same. Im guessing the ridges that the seals sit in are worn/damaged.....does this mean another new caliper? I dont think Honda still make new ones so its either another second hand job or shit loads of money.

Out of interest...the new pistons slid into the bores really easily and i can pick them out by finger too.....is this normal until the brake has built up a bit of heat and friction by use?

they should not be loose mate thats for sure.Are you sure they are the correct seals? Sounds like you got the wrong ones.

It sounds as though you are using a pattern piston/pistons in your caliper.This item could be undersize by comparison to your original piston.This could also be the reason why it is leaking brake fluid and why you can easily pull the piston in and out with not too much effort.

Can you measure the outside diameter of both new and old pistons?

Yeah you're right....the original pistons are 33mm but the new ones are about 32mm.....thats gay....they came as set with the seals. Why would pattern parts be the wrong size?

Good question.That is one of the downsides of buying pattern parts.Did you get them from Wemoto,Dave Silver or M&P?

Wemoto....the thing is, they dont make OEM bits for this bike any more.

ahhhhh

now it makes sense.

The 2nd hand caliper must've been from a 83-86 bike, whilst my bike is an 86-88 which has smaller sized pistons and seals. So really i should've checked the diameter before buying. Embarassed Now got 2 stainless pistons and seals i dont need. Ebay it is.

Thanks mate that would be helpful. Theres a score in one of the bores right at the back which i will have a go at honing but a better caliper would be easier all round really.

TBH as long as it from a vt500ef or ed it wont really matter what year as i think the caliper itself fits either wheel. I've got pistons and seals for both now Rolling Eyes
