Keeeeef!
Got teh MZ running, sorted the carb now she'll bump and pootle along quite happily. The problem is when the throttles off she won't idle at all. Give it a handful and away you go, but just dies when you come to a stop (with no throttle)
Kev and marj reckon it could be the needle or idle jet? There's also the mixture screw, but I dunno which way to turn it Very Happy

Cheers

Hi

The mixture screw might be an air adjustment or a mixture adjustment screw. They have similar effects, but with the first undoing it makes the mixture leaner, while the other makes the mixture richer. I don't know anything about the MZ carb to know what it is fitted with. This set up affects the idle jet, and it is possible that it is blocked (it is very small, so can be easily blocked).

I would doubt it is the needle jet. That should be irrelevant at idle.

As a start I would get some carb cleaner and then take out the mixture screw, then clean that circuit out with the carb cleaner (if you have not already played with the mixture screw, then first gently screw it all the way in counting the number of turns to find out how far out it initially was).

All the best

Keith

Is the battery buggered by any chance? Just a thought (probably totally irrelevant and not related) but if there isn't enough power coming from the alternator, and there isn't enough in the battery would this possibly cause it to not idle right?

No? Ignore me then. Laughing

No mate, shouldn't make any difference at all.

Charge the battery.

At tickover the battery is drawing fair current to charge it. It could be drawing so much that the ignition is left starved of current.

Are both jets very clean? The small holes should be clear, and you should be able to see happily down the middle of it.

Is the idle adjust screw set right? If its screwed right in (or out?) then it won't idle off throttle.

Does it have a fuel filter? If its running without a tap or fuel filter some crud could have been washed down from the tank and be blocking the jets.

And finally. Is the air filter clean, and is the plug in good condition and correctly gapped?

A final matter of good practice on 2 stroke carbs is to get the piston out of the carb (unscrew the top and draw it out), check it is clean, and give it a good smearing with 2 stroke oil. Stops it sticking.

Cheers Robby.

Battery's new and charged fully, spark plug's new and correctly adjusted, air filter's clean, jets look clean but I'll give them a check:D
