I don't know what it is about 2-smokes that I love most. The immense joy factor when you hit the powerband (pink and blue) or the knowledge that the EU hate your engine so much that they tried to ban it. Or the fact that your exhaust note can kill every kitteh in a 5-mile radius.

Also my Gixxer is lonely and told me I needed another one.

Are they any good? Also considering the RS250 but I've heard horror stories about plasticine pistons and vastly expensive servicing.

Cheers Dears
Thumbs Up

RS250 uses the RGV engine I thought.

Buy a YPVS or TZR if you must have a watercooled 2T.

I used to have a TZR125 Belgarda which was teh win, trouble is the 2MAs are rare and expensive and the 3XV is even rarer and pricier still.

The RS250 uses an RGV250 VJ22 engine. But with a solid powervalve pin instead of a rolled pin.

Therefore the RGV is a grenade, and the pin is made of cheese. The RS however, is much more reliable. A bit more powerful, and actually not as nice to ride (IMO).

However, if you really want a nice to ride two stroke that is useable I'd suggest a TZR250 2MA. Solid, reliable and quick for what they are. Not as powerful as the RGV or the RS, but actually a bit better to ride in my opinion. I wish I hadn't sold mine.

I want my RD to work properly... Sad

Always wanted a blast on an RS250 or RGV250 but never got the chance.

The fact of the matter is that they are as reliable as a paper umbrella in a storm, meaning i wouldnt go near owning one but im sure they would be an absolute joy to ride someone elses.

Cheers for the replies;

Never considered the RD.

Never owned a bike with straight bars either.

Maybe something to consider.

Are they hard to rebuild?

I'd like mine in one piece again, instead of the, large, Meccano set it resembles, just now! Neutral

You're not alone. I really miss 2-strokes, hardly see any about now.

We had a motly crew of mates which at one time had the following:

RG125 Wolf
RG125 Gamma
2 x Mitos
Planet
NSR125K
2 x NSR125Rs

Ah the fond memories. Mr. Green

Wonderful memories indeed, Had a Suz GT380, probably one of the most underated around, not as powerful as the competition but slightly more reliable and kudos with the "Ram Air" head!

Moved onto a 350 LC white n blue, non powervalve model, lovely.

Elder bro had the RD400 coffin tank again a lovely machine.

Me, I really fance a Widowmaker just for the plain hell of it...... but far too expensive nowadays.

My first 2 road bikes after passing my DAS were a KMX200 and a TZR250 2MA. moved onto 4strokes for a bit then, and thought i'd better start with a small one in case they are a bit snappy or aggressive in comparison to a stroker, so i got a 95 CG125. Laughing

I think with the prices of the classic choices in 2 strokes these days I'd be tempted to look at something like the old KTM 350 I had - very powerbandy thanks to no powervalve.
Then go along the 'moto 450' route and stick some road forks on, shorter rear shock and the like.

The RS250/RGV250 do fine if they are maintained ok.

2Ts are fine as long as you maintain them well, feed them decent oil and don't thrash them from cold. I went on the mayday run with my TZR250 with a few of the BCF crew and had a few favourable comments regarding the kitten killing fumes it was throwing out Laughing . Also ran for 181 miles trouble free and at times it wasn't hanging around. Get one, look after it and enjoy it.

My TZR could be keeper for life as long as I don't find another RG500 in my price range (had one years ago). The RG is the only bike I would part with the TZR for - and yes, I am tentatively looking Wink .

pretty fragile bikes, but i really enjoyed riding the old RS250 - if i was interested in maintenance equal to riding, i would have one.

I had a RGV250 (first of the gull-wing models) back in 1993 and it was my only transport. Dreadful commuter- Absolutely zero bottom end. Swapped it for a Kawasaki KR1 and that was much more usable. God I loved that bike.

Bloke at the pub, as no less than 6 showroom spec RD's, Wouldn't like to say how much they are worth, but he is nutter for riding them round the village on the back wheel, then comes in the pub and never really talks to anyone.

His garage is a total wank fest. for 2stroke.

I was heavily involved in the RD scene for years, had two or three myself at the same time, but did meet a few real obsessives, one guy had 13 x 350LC's all the same model (the early one) and another guy had a secret garage with 30+ yamaha strokers from 80cc to 500cc of every model and still collecting, they did a feature on him in classic mechanics

nowadays you can buy a kit to fit a 350 ypvs engine into an aprilia RS250 chassis, buy anything upto a 550cc big bore kit as the engine is more or less the same as the banshee quad which is raced in the states and end up with something light as a feather and over 120hp
